Ashanti Gold coach Akunnor eyeing Ghana PL survival

Ashanti Gold coach Charles Kwabena Akunnor believes his side will turn around the tides to avoid relegation from the Ghana Premier League.

The 2015 champions have experienced their worst start to any season in the last two decades, sitting 15th in the 16-club league after picking only three wins and suffering nine defeats in the first round.

However, Akunnor believes he has done enough following the arrival of new players as the league returns from the break. They will begin their survival mission with a trip to Wa to lock horns with Wa All Stars on Sunday.

"It looks positive for the team to avoid relegation from the way the players are preparing and I believe we could achieve our target," Akonnor told Graphic Sports.

"We detected some weakness in the team and have strengthened them with the acquisition of new players. And this should help us as we look to be better in the second round of the season," he added.

Ashanti Gold were able to sign Appiah McCarthy and Abeiku Ainooson from Asokwa Deportivo and Asante Kotoko respectively as well as striker Nurudeen Seidu from second-tier side Okyeman Planners.

Other new faces at the club include  veteran goalkeeper George Owu, Cudjoe Mensah, Kenneth Owusu, Aaron Amoah and former Kotoko midfielder Theophilus Nyame, who has joined as a free agent.
