Sergio Aguero could be a viable option for Manchester United in the summer transfer window, according to Paul Ince, who has urged Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to make a move for the Manchester City striker.

Aguero's future has been the subject of intense speculation in recent months, with the 32-year-old set to become a free agent when his contract at the Etihad Stadium expires at the end of June.

United are expected to be in the market for a new centre-forward at the end of the season amid links with Tottenham's Harry Kane and Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland, but Ince has suggested Aguero as a bold alternative target for his old club.

What's been said?

"It’s not as if Harry Kane and Erling Haaland are the only two answers for Man Utd. Sergio Aguero might be leaving Man City, why shouldn’t United make a move for him?" the ex-Red Devils midfielder told Ladbrokes .

"You could see it now; if he wanted to stay in the Premier League and he’s living in Manchester, then I don’t think it would be a bad thing at all if they went and got Aguero.

"It can happen, who knows? You’ve got to ask the question if you’re United because you never know. It happened with us back in 1992 when Howard Wilkinson was asking Sir Alex Ferguson about Denis Irwin.

"Fergie said there’d be no chance of that happening and suggested Leeds sold [Eric] Cantona to them and within a couple of days that deal was done.

"It was just Fergie throwing a name out there and taking a chance, trying his luck. Maybe that’s what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should do with Aguero this summer."

Would Aguero be a good signing for United?

Aguero has firmly established himself as one of the greatest strikers in Premier League history since moving to the Etihad from Atletico Madrid in 2011.

He has scored 181 goals in 271 top-flight matches for City to date, while also firing another 76 in cup competitions, but his numbers in the final third have dipped dramatically this season.

Aguero has only found the net three times through 14 appearances in 2020-21, with a string of niggling injuries preventing him from playing regularly for Pep Guardiola's side.

Who has played for United & City in the Premier League era?

United academy graduate Terry Cooke joined City on an initial loan deal in 1999.

Legendary goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, meanwhile, risked the wrath of Red Devils supporters three years later when he joined the Blues on a one-year deal, and rubbed salt in their wounds by celebrating a derby victory against his former club at Maine Road.

Andy Cole, another member of United's 1998-99 Treble-winning squad, signed for City in 2005, and finished his only season with the club as their top scorer.

Carlos Tevez's decision to swap Old Trafford for the Etihad in 2009 caused the most controversy, though, with the infamous 'Welcome to Manchester' poster confirming the Argentine's arrival at City effectively ruining his legacy with the Red Devils and marking a new era of success for their noisy neighbours.

Owen Hargreaves was the last player to make the jump from United to City in 2011, but he only appeared once for the club in the Premier League before departing the following year.
