Former Mamelodi Sundowns defender Wayne Arendse strongly believes the club will lift the CAF Champions League title this season following their big signings.Amongst other top players, Rhulani Mokwena's puddle of new signings consists of the current PSL top-goal-scorer,<a href="https://www.goal.com/en-za/lists/lorch-and-esquivel-unnecessary-signings-mamelodi-sundowns-slammed-by-club-legend-all-the-four-new-players-were-not-a-necessity/blt16ed6ad00b691f42" target="_blank"> Lucas Ribeiro, Marcelo Allende, Tashreeq Matthews, Thembinkosi Lorch and Argentine Matias Esquivel,</a> just to mention a few.While 2024 looks like it could be the Brazilians' year in the Champions League, their erstwhile captain is also adamant their bad luck in the competition will end this season considering the quality they have signed.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The Tshwane giants have made a good start to the season and are currently unbeaten in the Premier Soccer League, with only one defeat in CAF.Sundowns have been crowned PSL champions consecutively in the past six seasons, but Champions League glory has somehow managed to elude them.<a href="https://www.goal.com/en-za/news/mosimane-coached-mamelodi-sundowns-2016-caf-champions-league-triumph-still-hurting-ibenge-it-is-always-a-wound/blt94ae2f3b45a010b7" target="_blank">Since winning the competition under coach Pitso Mosimane in 2016,</a> Masandawana struggled to lift the title despite their impressive performances, with Mokwena so far unable to break that drought.Last season, the Chloorkop-based team suffered the heartbreak of bombing out of the tournament at the hands of Wydad Casablanca in the semi-finals.However, sounding so confident, Arendse, who was part of that CAF-winning squad in 2016, believes the club will bring it home after a long time of trying.

“I know I’m probably speaking beforehand, but I think this is the year for Sundowns because they just look unstoppable, the second star is coming,” Arendse told <a href="https://farpost.co.za/2024/03/27/wayne-arendse-4-reasons-why-sundowns-are-champions-league-favorites/" target="_blank">FARPost.</a>“You see what they are doing, they dominate. And they know what to do with the ball and put it in the back of the net. That’s it, just put the ball in the back of the net.“The way they went with the signings is top. It shows the depth is there, and the quality is there. They don’t just sign for the sake of signing.“A player knows that if he has an off day, the person on the bench is performing in the next game. The signings are at a level where no one can relax.“You have to stay on top of your level and make sure you’re 120 per cent. If you give 90 or 80 per cent, it won’t be good enough, and you’ll lose your place.”

WHAT WAS SAID

Bafana Ba Style, who are bossing the domestic football, will travel to Tanzania to face Young Africans, who are on top of the Tanzanian Premier League table.They will clash in the quarter-final's first leg on Saturday, March 30 at the iconic Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium, before locking horns six days later at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, Pretoria.
