U.S. international Alejandro Zendejas got Club América off to a bright start in the Apertura 2025, scoring the opening goal in their 1–1 draw against FC Juárez on Friday night. But beyond the scoreboard, his celebration sent a powerful message.

After finding the back of the net, Zendejas paid tribute to Portuguese star Diogo Jota, who tragically passed away days earlier in a car accident. The América winger honored him by mimicking one of Jota’s signature celebrations - a heartfelt moment that quickly made headlines across social media.

Zendejas has been in excellent form, despite being left off Mauricio Pochettino’s squads for both the Nations League and Gold Cup earlier this summer. His performance against Juárez served as a reminder of his quality and poise on big occasions.

Zendejas has cemented himself as a key figure for Club América in recent tournaments, and now he’s wearing a number that reflects it.

For the Apertura 2025, the USMNT winger has switched from No. 17 to No. 10, a move that symbolizes his growing importance within the squad and his role as the team’s creative leader.

He’s not the only one with a new number this season - club captain Henry Martín has also made a switch, moving from No. 21 to No. 9.
