Ultimate Sevilla dream team - Dani Alves and Sergio Ramos in defence, no Banega

Andalusian giants Sevilla have been a mainstay in the Spanish football circuit since 1890.

The record six-time Uefa Cup/Europa League champions have been one of the most competitive clubs in Spain and Europe for quite some time now.

Over the years, Sevilla has been home to some of the most technically gifted footballers we've ever seen.

Here we try to do justice to all of these footballers with our greatest Sevilla XI of all time!

  • Andres Palop SevillaGetty Images

    GK: Andres Palop

After being limited to just 43 appearances for his hometown club Valencia, Andres Palop joined Sevilla in 2005 and became one of the major reasons behind the club winning five titles in one calendar year.

An astonishing fact about Palop is that on March 15, 2007, he scored an injury-time equalising goal in the Uefa Cup Round of 16 tie against FC Shakhtar Donetsk, forcing extra time, which turned into a 3-2 win for Sevilla. He then led his team to win the 2006-07 Uefa Cup after saving three of four penalties against Espanyol in the final.

Palop made 217 appearances for Sevilla.

Another goalkeeper of yesteryear deserves to be spoken about here and his name is Jose Maria Busto. He made 160 appearances and won a La Liga and a Copa del Rey with Sevilla in his 16-year stint at the club.

  • Dani Alves Sevilla 17052016Getty Images

    RB: Dani Alves

The most decorated footballer in the history of football when it comes to club trophies, Dani Alves arrived at Sevilla from Brazilian club Bahia in 2003.

Alves made 237 appearances in all competitions, scoring 15 goals, providing 30 assists and won five trophies during his five years at Sevilla, including two Uefa Cups (Europa League), a Copa del Rey, a Spanish Super Cup and the Uefa Super Cup.

The Brazilian went on to join Barcelona in 2008 and won 26 trophies with the Catalan giants.

Julien Escude is Alves' competitor for this spot. He joined Sevilla from Ajax in 2006 and went on to make 235 appearances in all competitions for the club. Escude won two Uefa Cups and two Copa del Rey titles at Sevilla during his stint until 2012.

  • Sergio Ramos SevillaGetty

    CB: Sergio Ramos

After graduating from Sevilla's youth academy, Sergio Ramos featured for the senior team starting 2004.

He played for just one season at his childhood club, making 41 appearances before signing for Real Madrid and going on to create history in the Spanish capital.

He did not win any silverware with Sevilla and his entry here is based on the amount of success he achieved overall in his career.

Diego Carlos is another candidate for this position. The Brazilian joined Sevilla from Nantes in 2019 and went on to feature for three years at the club, making 102 appearances and winning the 2019-20 Europa League with the club. Carlos joined Aston Villa in 2022.

  • Pablo AlfaroGetty Images

    CB: Pablo Alfaro

Spanish centre-back Pablo Alfaro enjoyed impressive stints with Zaragoza, Racing Santander and Merida before catching the eye of Sevilla.

He joined in 2000 when the club was in the second division of the league and helped them get promoted back to La Liga in just his first season at the club.

Alfaro went on to feature for them until 2005, making 164 appearances. During his time at Sevilla, Alfaro formed an impressive partnership defensive with Javi Navarro, but after the promotion of then-youth academy star Ramos and the January 2006 arrival of Julien Escude, Alfaro became a secondary choice.

Alfaro won the 2005-06 Uefa Cup with Sevilla.

Alfaro's defensive partner Javi Navarro deserves the spotlight too. The Spaniard joined Sevilla from Valencia in 2001 and went on to make 168 appearances for the club until 2009. Navarro was Ramos' partner in defence in his final few years at the club. He won two Uefa Cups, a Copa del Rey and a Super Cup with Sevilla.

  • Manolo Jimenez Sevilla Champions LeagueGetty Images

    LB: Manolo Jimenez

Sevilla's GOAT, Manolo Jimenez graduated from their academy and made his first senior appearance for the club in 1984.

He went on to feature for 13 years at the club, making 413 appearances, although Jimenez never won a trophy in his career.

Later on between 2007 and 2010, he was the head coach of Sevilla.

Two other left-backs impressed for Sevilla during their time at the club.

First is Adriano Correia. He joined Sevilla in 2004 and made 157 appearances at left-back. He won five trophies, including two Copa del Rey crowns, a Spanish Super Cup, two Uefa Cups and a Super Cup. The Brazilian joined Barcelona in 2010.

The second left-back worth mentioning is David Castedo. After a seven-year stint at Mallorca, Castedo was signed by Sevilla in 2000. He made 235 appearances for the club, winning a second-division league title, two Uefa Cups, a Super Cup and a Copa del Rey. Castedo joined Levante in 2007.

  • Ivan Rakitic SevillaGetty Images

    CM: Ivan Rakitic

Croatian legend Ivan Rakitic has featured for Sevilla over two separate stints.

He first joined them from Schalke in 2011 and went on to make 117 appearances, scoring 27 goals, and winning the 2013-14 Europa League.

In 2014, Barcelona beat immense competition from some top clubs in Europe to sign Rakitic.

His stint at Camp Nou was filled with silverware. Rakitc made 200 appearances for them, winning four La Liga titles, four Copa del Rey crowns, a Spanish Super Cup, a Champions League, a Super Cup and a Club World Cup with the Blaugrana.

The Croatian maestro returned to Sevilla in 2022.

Two Sevilla greats can give Rakitic a run for his money.

First is Ever Banega. The Argentine midfielder, like Rakitic, enjoyed two stints at Sevilla. His first was between 2014 and 2016, when he made 59 appearances before joining Inter. He played just one season in Italy and rejoined Sevilla in 2017. He stayed at the club until 2020 in his second stint, making 96 appearances before joining Al Shabab. Banega won three Europa League titles with Sevilla.

The second star worth mentioning is Vicente Iborra. The versatile midfielder joined Sevilla from Levante in 2013. He featured for Sevilla for five years, making 113 appearances and scoring 24 goals. During his time at Sevilla, his manager Unai Emery often used him in an attacking position while chasing games. Iborra, like Banega, won three Europa League titles with Sevilla.

  • Renato Sevilla 17052016Getty Images

    CM: Renato

With 286 appearances across all competitions for Sevilla between 2004 and 2011, Renato helped the club win back-to-back Europa Leagues between 2005 and 2007.

He also helped them win two Copa del Rey crowns, a Spanish Super Cup and a Super Cup.

An interesting fact about Renato is that he scored his first goal for Sevilla in the first minute of his debut for the club.

The Brazilian midfielder was often deployed as a destroyer and played a huge role in helping Sevilla to a fourth-place finish in the 2009-10 season.

  • Jesus Navas Sevilla 2018-19Getty Images

    RAM: Jesus Navas

One of the all-time Sevilla greats, Jesus Navas graduated from the club's academy in 2003 and went on to play 285 games in a decade-long stint, during which he won six trophies - two Europa Leagues, two Copa del Rey trophies, a Spanish Super Cup and a Uefa Super Cup.

Manchester City signed him in 2013, where he played 123 times and won a Premier League title and two League Cups before returning to Sevilla in 2017. He made over 170 appearances in his second stint with the club, winning a Europa League in 2019-20.

Not many can come close to Navas' legacy at Sevilla, but Vitolo does deserve a mention. The Spaniard joined Sevilla in 2013 and went on to make 113 appearances for them until 2017, scoring 18 goals. He won three back-to-back Europa League titles with Sevilla between 2013 and 2016.

  • Jose Antonio Reyes Sevilla Europa LeagueGetty Images

    LAM: Jose Antonio Reyes

It's never easy to express in words regarding a player who was dear to the world of football and passed away at such a young age.

We're talking about Jose Antonio Reyes, who was tragically killed in a car accident in 2019 at age 35.

Surely Sevilla's greatest midfield playmaker, Reyes featured in two different stints at the club. His first came in 2000 after gaining promotion from Sevilla's B team. Until 2004, Reyes scored 21 goals in 86 games before joining Arsenal and featuring for their famous "Invincibles" team. He later featured for Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Benfica before returning to Sevilla in 2012 for his second stint.

He played there for four more years, making 109 appearances before joining Espanyol in 2016.

At Sevilla, Reyes won a second-division title and three back-to-back Europa League titles between 2013 and 2016.

    A true Sevilla great!

Diego Perotti also made a noteworthy impact at Sevilla. The attacking midfielder joined their academy from Argentine club Deportivo Moron in 2007. After just two years at the academy, he was promoted to Sevilla's senior team in 2009.

Perotti competed for a first-team starting position with another Sevilla academy graduate, Diego Capel. But Perotti made a bigger impact than his colleague when he scored his first goal for the club against Deportivo de La Coruna on May 23 in the 90th minute to guarantee Sevilla a third-place finish in La Liga, thus marking their return to the Champions League. From the 2009-10 season, Perotti became a regular in attacking midfield for Sevilla. He made 117 appearances for the club until 2014, scoring nine goals.

  • Davor SukerGetty Images

    ST: Davor Suker

One of the greatest strikers of all time, Davor Suker featured for multiple clubs in his career with stints spread across Spain, England and Germany.

He initially arrived from Zagreb to Spain with Sevilla in 1991 and went on to achieve legendary status at the club, scoring 76 goals in 153 appearances until 1996 before Real Madrid signed him.

An interesting fact about Suker's reign in Spain was that he even played alongside the great Diego Maradona in the 1992-93 season when the Argentine was at Sevilla.

Despite going on to achieve greatness at Sevilla, Suker did not win a trophy at the club.

Now, it's important to understand that Sevilla has been home to some epic strikers. So here are four honourable mentions.

Starting with Guillermo Campanal. The great Sevilla striker of the late 1930s joined the club in 1929 and scored 100 goals in 157 games until 1946, winning a La Liga title and two Copa del Rey trophies. Later in his career, he even managed Sevilla.

After Campanal comes Kevin Gameiro. The French forward was quite a revelation when he burst onto the scene at Lorient in France. PSG signed him and when he failed to gain playing time there, he joined Sevilla in 2013. Gameiro scored 39 goals in 92 appearances for the club, helping them win three back-to-back Europa League titles between 2013 and 2016.

A bonafide Sevilla legend and their greatest-ever goalscorer, Juan Arza joined in 1943 and played for them for 16 years. During that time, he scored 207 goals in 414 games, winning a La Liga and Copa del Rey. He even managed Sevilla on four different occasions in his coaching career.

Alvaro Negredo joined Sevilla from Real Madrid in 2009 and featured for them for four years, scoring 70 goals in 139 games, winning the 2009-10 Copa del Rey. He joined Manchester City in 2013.

  • Frederic Kanoute Sevilla Uefa CupGetty Images

    ST: Frederic Kanoute

Frederic Kanoute joined Sevilla from Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur in 2005.

The Mali international scored 136 goals in 290 matches for Sevilla in his seven-year stint at the club.

Kanoute won six trophies at Sevilla, a Copa del Rey in 2006-07 and 2009-10, a Spanish Super Cup in 2007, back-to-back Europa Leagues in 2005-06 and 2006-07 and a Uefa Super Cup in 2006.

The 2006-07 season was one to remember for Kanoute as he scored 30 goals across all competitions.

Competing with Kanoute for the striker's spot are three footballing masters!

Starting with Juan Araujo, the striker played for Sevilla between 1945 and 1956, winning a La Liga title and a Copa del Rey. He scored an incredible 136 goals in just 210 appearances for Sevilla.

Brazilian forward Luis Fabiano, who featured for Sevilla between 2005 and 2011, deserves a mention too. The pacy striker scored 72 goals in 149 appearances for the club, winning two Copa del Rey trophies, two Europa Leagues, a Spanish Super Cup and a Super Cup.

Last but not least by any means, Carlos Bacca joined Sevilla in 2013 for €7 million and won the Europa League twice in his two seasons at the club, scoring a brace in the final of the tournament in 2015. In total, the Colombian scored 34 goals in 72 games for Sevilla as he attained a cult-hero status there.
