'Representation matters' - Toronto FC head coach Robin Fraser speaks out about his journey as Black coach in MLS

Robin Fraser, head coach of Toronto FC, has shared his thoughts on the challenges faced by Black coaches in Major League Soccer. Fraser was appointed as the new head coach of Toronto FC in January 2025 marking his return to the club where he previously served as an assistant coach. As one of the few Black head coaches in Major League Soccer history, Fraser's appointment brings attention to the ongoing challenges Black coaches face in securing top positions within the league. He also opened up about his love for the game and how he fell in love.

“When did my love for the game begin? Well, I grew up in Jamaica and my dad took me to watch the 1974 World Cup. They would show games on the big screen in the national arena and I think I watched maybe three games. Ever since I came out of that experience and then after that it was a rolled-up ball of socks in the living room, under one couch was a goal, and under the other couch was a goal, and somehow I played both teams by myself,” Fraser said.

Fraser's comments come at a time when MLS is facing increased scrutiny over its lack of diversity in coaching positions. Despite the league's diverse player pool, the number of Black head coaches remains disproportionately low. He pointed out that when all the right elements come together, including supportive upper management, positive results can follow.

Fraser’s Toronto FC drew their MLS opener against DC United in a thrilling 2-2 fixture with goals from Jonathan Osorio and Federico Bernardeschi. It wasn’t an auspicious start for Fraser’s side and they have back-to-back games on the road in the league against Orlando City SC and FC Cincinnati.
