Now, a leaked report from UEFA's Referees' Committee on the summer tournament has generated outrage in Germany. The report highlights the Cucurella handball as one incident that should have ended in a penalty, sparking a frustrated response from Kroos.

"It took them three months to realise that there was a handball, something that almost everyone could see in a second. That reassures me a lot (laughs)," he is quoted as saying by Marca. "Can I say that I am now European champion because it has been officially confirmed? I don't think so."

The 34-year-old called time on his career after that match. He bowed out of the game as a six-time Champions League winner, four-time La Liga champion and three-time Bundesliga winner at club level and won the 2014 World Cup with Germany.
