  • Far-right party on track for defeat
  • Far-left alliance has seemingly won
  • France stars thrilled by result
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

France went to the polls on Sunday to elect a new government and, despite many opinion polls claiming that the far-right National Party, led by Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella, would claim victory, the exit poll has instead pointed towards victory for a far-left coalition that has been organised to stop the march of extremism. The Left-Green New Popular Front has taken a shock lead, with Emmanuel Macron's party predicted to finish second.

    WHAT THE PLAYERS ARE SAYING

France's players have been jubilant in their response.

Barcelona star Jules Kounde wrote: "The relief is equal to the worry of recent weeks, it is immense. Congratulations to all the French people who mobilized so that this beautiful country that is France does not find itself governed by the extreme right."

Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni wrote: "The people's victory."

And Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate merely posted five emojis: Two of the French flag, two of a roadblock, and one of a hand clapping.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

France's players have engaged with the election in a major way throughout Euro 2024, with Kylian Mbappe even claiming that he would not represent France if the far-right were to emerge victorious. He also used his platform to urge young people to get to polling stations and vote.

    WHAT NEXT?

Votes must be counted overnight and it should be remembered that the exit poll is merely a projection. However, they have historically been very accurate. In the meantime, France's players are preparing for their Euro 2024 semi-final against Spain.
