Ryan Reynolds & Rob McElhenney's cult-hero 'Welcome to Wrexham' Welsh interpreter set for top honour

BBC News reports that Maxine Hughes will be honoured by Gorsedd Cymru at this year's National Eisteddfod in Wrexham County thanks to her distinguished contribution to the Welsh nation, the language, and its culture.

After working for BBC News and establishing herself as a broadcaster and journalist, Hughes landed the part of the official Welsh interpreter for the Wrexham TV series. She has become a fan favourite on the show, particularly for poking fun at Reynolds and McElhenney while trying to teach them Welsh.

Hughes, who now lives in Washington DC, flew out to Los Angeles to audition for the role on 'Welcome to Wrexham' and eventually landed the part.

Previously, she said on Reynolds and McElhenney: "They're really lovely people, very funny in real life. They really care passionately about Wrexham, about Wales, about the Welsh language too. They were really concerned that what we were doing was respectful to Welsh, that we were making fun of [the two actors] and not the Welsh language."

Hughes may yet feature in 'Welcome to Wrexham' again this season, with episode five of the fourth series set to air on Thursday, June 5.
