After reviewing the footage, they confirmed: "The foul was definitely committed by Wesley; he made contact with his right leg – confirmed." The referee on the pitch also explained to the players that he had initially allowed play to continue following a previous challenge by Pellegrini – which VAR had judged to be on the ball – before then blowing for Wesley’s foul, resulting in his sending-off for a second yellow card.
