Makgopa is in his second season at Pirates where he is trusted by coach Jose Riveiro to spearhead their attack.Despite Makgopa not being the prolific forward he was at Baroka FC, Riveiro still trusts him as well as Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos.Baroka boss Khurushi Mphahlele compares the striker to the late Phil Msinga and sees a bright future for the 23-year-old who will, however, miss the next Bafana camp due to injury.

WHAT HAPPENED?

“You know when you start from humble beginnings, you didn’t expect so much and we just thought they would just like any other normal boys – play, play, and disappear,” Mphahlele told <a href="https://www.idiskitimes.co.za/bafana-bafana/makgopa-is-the-next-phil-masinga-of-sa-football/" target="_blank">iDiski Times</a>.“God got his plans, and we are very much proud, we are excited, we are happy. When I watched Bafana, I just wanted them to give the ball to Makgopa so that he could do what we know he can do – score the goals. Because Makgopa is the next Phil Masinga of our South African football.“The way they run, it looks similar, and they are very good in the air as well. I think Makgopa can even do better locally and internationally because he is improving in each game he plays there.”

WHAT MPHAHLELE SAID

Mphahlele speaks glowingly of Makgopa despite the striker not being a sharpshooter since joining the Buccaneers.Injuries blighted his start to life at Pirates last season and he managed no goal in six appearances.This term he has six goals in 20 games across all competitions for the Buccaneers.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

After starting the year on a hectic note with Bafana Bafana at the Africa Cup of Nations tournament, Makgopa returned to get busy with Pirates.But the upcoming Fifa international period is expected to give him a breather and allow him to get back to full fitness.
