NFL Week 5 WINNERS & LOSERS: Denver comes up with a huge win to beat the Eagles, while the Jets and Raiders fall to epic lows

Week 5 in the NFL brought on numerous notable results as several teams picked up emphatic wins, while others were on the receiving end of alarming ringing losses.

Both of the league's final two undefeated teams picked up losses this week as the Denver Broncos pulled off a massive fourth-quarter comeback to hand the Philadelphia Eagles a loss, while the New England Patriots pulled off an upset against their AFC East rivals, the Buffalo Bills.

The Jacksonville Jaguars also announced themselves as legitimate contenders in the AFC this season after upsetting the Kansas City Chiefs and pushing their record to 4-1 to start the Liam Coen era in Duval.

The Tennessee Titans were able to defeat the Arizona Cardinals on a 22-21 nail-biter that netted no. 1 overall pick Cam Ward his first win in the NFL. That was not the only close game of Sunday afternoon as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers continued their trend of winning close games by defeating the Seattle Seahawks 38-35.

Fans also witnessed a closely-fought battle as the Carolina Panthers defeated the Dolphins 27-24 in Miami's first game without injured superstar Tyreek Hill, while Thursday night's action between the San Francisco 49ers and LA Rams ended with the 49ers picking up a hard-fought 23-20 win.

The Indianapolis Colts erupted for a 40–6 blowout of the Las Vegas Raiders, pushing their record to 4–1 and signaling that Daniel Jones might finally be settling in, while the New Orleans Saints grabbed their first win under head coach Kellen Moore, with a 26–14 victory over the New York Giants, capitalizing on multiple Giants turnovers.

Elsewhere, the Washington Commanders beat the Los Angeles Chargers as Jayden Daniels returned from injury, the Dallas Cowboys went on the road to obliterate the New York Jets, and the Detroit Lions defeated the Cincinnati Bengals. Finally, in action taking place across the pond in London, the Minnesota Vikings spoiled rookie quarterback Dillion Gabriel's first start by defeating the Cleveland Browns.

GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from Week 5 in the NFL.

    WINNER: Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars proved to the NFL world that they are a legitimate contender this season after upsetting the Kansas City Chiefs 31-28 on Monday Night Football. Jacksonville fought hard to pull off the victory after trailing at halftime and benefited from several huge plays that turned the game in their favor.

A 99-yard interception return from Jaguars linebacker Devin Lloyd proved to be perhaps the most pivotal of the game after turning what looked like it would be a scoring drive for the Chiefs into the second Jaguars touchdown of the third quarter, and gave Jacksonville a 21-14 lead at the time.

Jacksonville still had to come back from behind again after Kansas City took a 28-24 lead following a drive that burned over six minutes off the clock before star quarterback Trevor Lawrence pulled off one of the best touchdowns of the NFL season.

Lawrence had tripped and fallen after his foot was stepped on by one of his offensive lineman before getting up and having the awareness to spot an open lane to find his way into the endzone for what would be the game-winning score.

    LOSER: Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens are back in this slot again after suffering a 44-10 loss to the Houston Texans. Baltimore entered the season as one of the favorites to make a run at the Super Bowl, but it appears the Ravens have hit rock bottom instead.

Not only was the 34-point loss the Ravens' second-worst defeat during the 18-year tenure of head coach John Harbaugh, but this season is only the second time in the franchise's history that Baltimore has gotten off to a 1-4 start. Baltimore's injury-riddled defense allowed the most points in any home game under Harbaugh, and it became clear that the defensive coordinator Zach Orr's hopes of seeing more physicality on that side of the ball went unanswered.

Things are not looking up for the Ravens either, as they are expected to be without starting quarterback Lamar Jackson for the second week in a row as they prepare for a tough game against the LA Rams.

WINNER: Denver Broncos and New England Patriots

Defeating one of the final undefeated teams in the league is always a big deal, and that's exactly what both the Broncos and Patriots did. Denver picked up the biggest one of head coach Sean Payton's tenure by handing the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles a 21-17 loss.

Denver entered the fourth quarter trailing 17-3 and looked sluggish on both sides of the ball before quarterback Bo Nix led the offense on three straight scoring drives. Philadelphia did not go down easily, however, and the game was not decided until the final play when a Hail Mary attempt fell incomplete in the endzone.

New England, on the other hand, were able to pull off a 23-20 win to make the Buffalo Bills taste defeat for the first time this season. The game was the toughest test so far for second-year quarterback Drake Maye and new head coach Mike Vrabel, and it's safe to say they passed.

This one win may not signify that the Patriots are ready to dethrone the five-time AFC East Champions for the division crown, but it showed that the Patriots have to be considered contenders to fight for a wild card spot and potentially sneak into the playoffs this year.

Furthermore, newly acquired wide receiver Stefon Diggs will surely have the locker room vibes at an all-time high after defeating the team he so famously exited only two seasons ago.

  • Dallas Cowboys v New York Jets - NFL 2025Getty Images Sport

    LOSER: New York Jets

The New York Jets just flat out didn't show up until garbage time in their 37-22 loss against the Dallas Cowboys. Not only did the Jets suffer an embarrassing loss as they fell to 0-5 for the third time in the last 30 years, but the defense also made history by becoming the first team in NFL history to not record a turnover while starting 0-5.

Furthermore, the team seems to be regressing in key areas that rookie head coach Aaron Glenn has stressed cleaning up, like missed tackles, penalties, and ball security. A ball security issue seemingly turned all of the momentum in the game against the Jets for the second week in a row after a fumble by running back Breece Hall led to the Cowboys' two touchdowns in the final minutes of the second quarter.

Things aren't looking promising for the Jets as they try to get Glenn his first win as a head coach, either, as the Jets are heading to London for a matchup with the Denver Broncos this week.

  • New York Giants v New Orleans Saints - NFL 2025Getty Images Sport

    WINNER: Kellen Moore

New Orleans Saints head coach Kellen Moore picked up his first win as an NFL head coach after his team pulled off a 26-14 victory over the New York Giants. Moore's first win was not the only notable achievement for the Saints, as the win allowed them to put an end to an eight-game losing streak that spanned back to December 8, 2024.

Saints starting quarterback Spencer Rattler was also able to pick up his first win as a starting quarterback in the NFL after putting up a strong performance and throwing for 21-31, 225 yards and a touchdown. It wasn't the prettiest win New Orleans will ever see as red zone issues led to two missed field goals and the pass protection left Rattler under pressure for most of the game, however the Saints defense ended up making all the difference.

New Orleans defense recorded turnovers on five-straight possessions, which went on to be pivotal in deciding a winner.

  • Las Vegas Raiders v Indianapolis Colts - NFL 2025Getty Images Sport

    LOSER: Las Vegas Raiders

The Las Vegas Raiders suffered their fourth-straight loss in an embarrassing 40-6 defeat to the Indianapolis Colts, and it's hard to imagine the season starting off worse for new head coach Pete Carroll. Countless mental errors and an inability to execute in the red zone were issues that were supposed to improve under Carroll's tenure and have seemingly gotten worse.

To make matters worse, Geno Smith was brought in from Seattle to be an upgrade at quarterback. However, the 34-year-old signal caller currently leads the NFL with nine interceptions. Smith's nine interceptions through five games are, in fact, the most by any Raiders quarterback since Jim Plunkett in 1982.
