GettyWHAT HAPPENED?
Chelsea fans had hoped that the arrival of Pochettino in the summer would take the club back to their previous levels after a bad season under the management of Graham Potter and Frank Lampard. However, the Blues have fallen further behind their competition despite a significant spend, hence the Argentine has come under criticism for a lack of results. However, Gallas believes winning the FA Cup would be enough for Pochettino to continue at Stamford Bridge past this summer.
WHAT GALLAS SAID
Speaking to Genting Casino, Gallas said: "Look, when you’re in the quarter-final, with the opportunity to go to Wembley, you have to keep going. I think Poch’s future will depend on him winning the FA Cup. If he can lift that trophy, then I expect him to be in charge next season. He also needs to win it for himself because he has never lifted a trophy in England as a manager.
"He is under a lot of pressure to show that he is capable of winning trophies with Chelsea. It's not easy when you’re the manager of Chelsea, but this is a game that they must win. Every game for Poch is like a final. Every game will be difficult for him from now until the end of the season. Getting a victory against Newcastle would have helped him and the team’s confidence going into this game against Leicester. The atmosphere at Stamford Bridge will be positive."
He also talked about why Pochettino received hate from the fans: "Everything in football is about the results. The fans aren’t happy with him, not because he used to be the manager of Tottenham, but because the results haven’t been good enough for Chelsea this season. If the results were better, if he won the Carabao Cup, if Chelsea were in a position where they could qualify for the Champions League, then the fans wouldn’t have a problem with Pochettino.
"The Chelsea fans want to see their team winning. They want to go to Stamford Bridge, see a positive result and enjoy their weekend. That is what football is all about. His Tottenham history wouldn’t mean anything if he was getting the right results for the club."
GettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE
Chelsea have been straddling the midtable in the Premier League since the start of the season. They currently sit in 11th place, four points behind West Ham in seventh. Even a strong end to the season is unlikely to see the club secure European football for next season, with Jose Mourinho among those touted to take over from the Argentine in the summer.
WHAT NEXT FOR CHELSEA?
The under-pressure Blues side will have an easier fixture in the FA Cup quarter-finals than their competitors as they will take on Championship side Leicester City at the Stamford Bridge on Sunday, March 17.
