Man Utd 2024-25 season ratings - every player ranked: From awesome Amad Diallo to toothless Rasmus Hojlund

Well, at least it's over now. Manchester United's 2024-25 season has been an ordeal no one should have ever had to put up with. It ended with the team languished in 15th in the Premier League table, their lowest finish in the league's history and their worst showing since they were last relegated from the top flight in 1974.

It was not just the final league position that made for grim reading, though. The Red Devils lost 18 of their 38 matches and had a goal difference of minus 10, finishing on just 42 points. Last season eighth-placed finish was a catastrophe, but compared to this one, it looks fantastic.

Erik ten Hag lasted nine matches before he was sacked in October, only four months after being handed a contract extension. Interim coach Ruud van Nistelrooy was unbeaten in his four matches in charge and there was plenty of hope that Ruben Amorim would be able to turn United around after successfully waking another sleeping giant in Sporting CP. The Portuguese talked a good gamem but the team could not adapt to his 3-4-2-1 formation, and Amorim was not ready to compromise.

United's FA Cup defence ended in the fifth round with a penalty shootout defeat at home to Fulham while they were knocked out of the Carabao Cup in the quarter-finals by Tottenham, a team that would end up haunting them like no one else. The only positive aspect of this harrowing campaign was the Europa League campaign, and United fans will never forget what they were doing when Harry Maguire completed the most epic of extra-time comebacks against Lyon. Amorim's team also produced two excellent performances against Athletic Club in the semi-final, but when they returned to Bilbao for the final, they froze and were out-fought by Tottenham, who nicked the golden ticket of Champions League qualification from their grasp.

GOAL rates all the United players from their season from hell..

    28Tyrell Malacia - N/A

Returned from obscurity after 18 months out following two knee surgeries to play a few games under Amorim, but looked way off the pace and a loan switch to PSV in late January felt like a good move for everyone. Malacia did not play much for his new club either, though he did collect an Eredivisie winners' medal.

  • Toby Collyer Man Utd 2024-25Getty Images

    27Toby Collyer - N/A

The former Brighton youngster was thrown in at the deep end against Liverpool in September as Ten Hag took off the hapless Casemiro, although he has had to wait patiently for opportunities since. Got a good run of games under Amorim - being chosen ahead of Casemiro at times - although two untimely injuries disrupted his progress.

  • Manchester United FC v Aston Villa FC - Premier LeagueGetty Images Sport

    26Jonny Evans - N/A

The much-loved veteran was given another year at United after showing he still had plenty to offer as a squad player upon his surprise return last season. It proved to be one campaign too many, though, as Evans made a smattering of appearances under Ten Hag and then started Amorim’s first game in charge, only to fall indefinitely out of the XI thereafter.

  • Harry Amass Man Utd Getty

    25Harry Amass - N/A

After an encouraging pre-season tour, the teenager had to wait until March to finally make his debut. Amass made four starts, all in games before or after Europa League matches, and with each outing his physical shortcomings became more obvious. He will need to bulk up before the next season if he wants to get more opportunities.

  • Chido Obi-Martin Manchester United 2024-25Getty

    24Chido Obi - N/A

There was tangible excitement surrounding the 17-year-old following a record-breaking showing in front of goal for the Under-18s, but senior football is tougher than it looks and Obi has looked decidedly raw in his seven appearances.

He showed promising movement against Fulham in the FA Cup, but struggled to control balls and defenders have been quick to suss him out. A big future lies ahead, but he must wait a little longer and work a lot harder to make it happen.

  • Ayden Heaven Man Utd Arsenal 2025Getty Images Sport

    23Ayden Heaven - N/A

"He is so relaxed, sometimes too relaxed," said Amorim of Heaven, who signed in January from Arsenal having only played 10 minutes of senior football. He had an exciting run in the team in March, playing four times in two weeks, but his progress was halted with a foot injury at Leicester.

He enjoyed another encouraging performance on the final day against Aston Villa, but went off early with an injury.

  • Manchester United FC v Brighton & Hove Albion FC - Premier LeagueGetty Images Sport

    22Antony - 2/10

The Brazilian’s new-found status as a football God at Real Betis has been unfathomable to anyone who watched him regularly at United. No fan was disappointed about Antony leaving on loan in January as the only thing he did of note was score a penalty in the thrashing of Barnsley.

His value has, however, skyrocketed in Spain, and United should cash in rather than hope he will get it right back at Old Trafford.

  • Rasmus HojlundGetty Images Sport

    21Rasmus Hojlund - 3/10

Hojlund's showing on the final day against Aston Villa summed up his whole season: he posed little threat, bungled the one clear-cut opportunity he did get, and when he finally did put the ball in the net, the offside flag went up!

After a decent if slightly underwhelming first season settling into a new club and league, this was supposed to be the year Hojlund started to pay back his £72 million ($97m) transfer fee and turned into a top striker. Instead, he has gone backwards, his confidence shrinking with every match. The Denmark international went more than four months without scoring at one stage and ended the season with just four Premier League goals and no assists. The Europa League was his saving grace, with six goals, but only one of those came in the knockouts as he fell flat in the final.

  • Altay Bayindir Manchester United 2025Getty

    20Altay Bayindir - 3/10

Bayindir introduced the word 'Olimpico' to United fans with a shambolic performance at Tottenham in the Carabao Cup as he conceded a goal directly from a corner, while his penalty saves in the FA Cup at Arsenal were the only high points of a very poor second campaign at Old Trafford.

He was injured for the remaining cup ties and endured a debacle at Newcastle, a game which was supposed to offer some relief to Onana. It was telling that he didn't start the penultimate game of the league season at Chelsea five days before the Europa League final, and when Bayindir did play on the final day against Villa, he made a calamitous error, only to be let off the hook by refereeing incompetence.

  • Luke Shaw Manchester United 2024-25Getty Images

    19Luke Shaw - 3/10

Shaw's card was marked when he over-worked himself to get fit for Euro 2024 after spending the majority of the last campaign out injured, and guess what happened? He suffered another big injury, meaning he did not start the season until late November before then picking up yet another injury, ruling him out for another four months.

The England left-back has not been the same since returning in April, losing four of the five matches he started without winning once, and was one of the worst performers in the Europa League final.

  • victor-lindelof(C)Getty Images

    18Victor Lindelof - 4/10

Has had a sad yet fitting end to a very disappointing career at Old Trafford. Lindelof missed chunks of the season out injured then found himself at the bottom of the defensive pecking order as he ended the campaign with just 12 starts in all competitions.

Had to be called upon in the latter stage of the campaign and did his best, particularly against Athletic when he made a goal-saving block, but it was clear that he was not at the level needed and few fans will miss him.

  • Andre Onana Manchester United 2024-25Getty

    17Andre Onana - 4/10

Had an okay start, saving a penalty at Southampton and making an unreal double save at Fenerbahce which had Jose Mourinho calling him the best goalkeeper in the world. But soon enough, Onana was haunted by the same concentration errors he made last season.

Conceded straight from a corner at Wolves, made two clangers against Nottingham Forest and two more against Brighton. And yet the worst was still to come in the shape of his shocker in Lyon after his entirely avoidable war of words with Nemanja Matic. United should be looking to replace Onana in the summer, despite signing him for £47m ($63m) in 2023 at the expense of David de Gea.

  • Marcus Rashford Man UtdGetty

    16Marcus Rashford - 4/10

Rashford endured a difficult start to the season after a terrible last campaign. His productivity remained stagnant while his body language and reluctance to work off the ball further entrenched fans’ anger towards him.

The England forward scored three times in Amorim’s first two league games, but their relationship never recovered when it emerged the player had gone on a night out 48 hours before the win over Everton. Rashford’s return to form on loan at Aston Villa was a pleasant surprise, but does not change the fact his relationship with United has become untenable. What is concerning, however, is that Rashford was United’s fourth-highest scorer in the league despite leaving halfway through the season.

  • Mason Mount Manchester United 2024Getty Images

    15Mason Mount - 4/10

Mount has had another wretched campaign and is no closer to paying back his £60m ($81m) transfer fee from two years ago. Although he played marginally more minutes this time around compared to 2023-24, Mount continued to be dogged by injuries as he missed over 20 weeks with three separate problems, although he continued to impress Amorim with his attitude.

His only major contribution was to see off the threat of Athletic in the Europa League semi-final second leg, which mistakenly encouraged the coach to start him in the final over Manuel Ugarte and Alejandro Garnacho. Mount was flat in Bilbao, and although Amorim remains a big admirer, there are not many more within the fanbase.

  • Leicester City FC v Manchester United FC - Premier LeagueGetty Images Sport

    14Christian Eriksen - 5/10

Eriksen continued to play the role of squad player in his third and final season at United, although he had a bigger role than expected when Ten Hag was still in charge as he scored four goals and three assists in an eight-game period. His importance faded when Amorim took the reins, as he started a total of eight matches in the next seven months.

The coach retained respect for Eriksen, making sure he took the penalty against Villa and signed off from Old Trafford with a Premier League goal.

  • AFC Bournemouth v Manchester United FC - Premier LeagueGetty Images Sport

    13Kobbie Mainoo - 5/10

The homegrown midfielder was the revelation of last season, but he has faded in importance and looks set to join fellow FA Youth Cup winner Garnacho in leaving after failing to impress Amorim.

A poor performance at home to Liverpool knocked Mainoo's confidence, and not long after he was sidelined for two months due to injury. His return coincided with United losing six games in a dismal December and it being reported that the club would be open to selling him. A month later, Amorim hauled Mainoo off against Southampton and then briefly experimented with playing him as both a No.10 and a false nine.

Mainoo then suffered another injury and barely got a look in after returning, as his brilliant curler against Lyon looks like being his last big moment in a red shirt.

  • Newcastle United FC v Manchester United FC - Premier LeagueGetty Images Sport

    12Joshua Zirkzee - 5/10

Zirkzee scored the winner on his United debut against Fulham, but his lack of pace soon became a problem. Having his early substitution against Newcastle applauded by large sections of Old Trafford was one of the most uncomfortable moments of the season, but he showed mental fortitude to bounce back struck the winning penalty against Arsenal a few weeks later.

The Dutchman's performances continued to improve, even if goals remained rare events (just three in the Premier League). His injury at Newcastle felt like a massive blow, largely because it meant Hojlund was the only fit and experienced centre-forward left to see out the campaign.

  • Lisandro Martinez Manchester United 2024-25Getty

    11Lisandro Martinez - 5/10

Had a tough start but soon looked back into his old self and became the leader of the defence again while also becoming an attacking asset thanks to his passing vision. Unfortunately, just as things were looking up and Martinez had scored a priceless winner at Fulham, disaster struck in the form of an ACL injury which knocked him out of action until next season.

  • Patrick Dorgu Manchester United 2024-25Getty

    10Patrick Dorgu - 5/10

Dorgu became Amorim’s first signing in January when he joined from Lecce, and it was hoped that he would help United play how their coach desired. His impact has, however, been underwhelming.

The Dane doesn't have a goal nor an assist to show from his 18 games and had a spectacularly bad night against Ipswich, as he gave a goal away before getting sent off in the first half. Dorgu has not looked quick enough to get behind opposition full-backs and his final ball has often been lacking, while his defensive work has also been poor, as illustrated by him failing to pick up match-winner Brennan Johnson in the Europa League final.

  • Manchester United v Olympique Lyonnais - UEFA Europa League 2024/25 Quarter Final Second LegGetty Images Sport

    9Manuel Ugarte - 5/10

Ugarte made a slow start after his £42m ($56m) move from Paris Saint-Germain as he was given few opportunities by Ten Hag. But after the Dutchman was sacked, he endeared himself to fans by displaying his ball-winning abilities.

The Uruguayan's combative nature was epitomised by his performance at Arsenal in the FA Cup and him then writing on social media: "When we have the ball, it’s a game and when we don’t, it’s a fight." Other highlights include his thumping equaliser at Everton, scoring against Lyon and his two assists against Athletic. However, Ugarte continued to show a tendency to give the ball away in dangerous areas which may have cost him a place in the Europa League final starting XI.

  • Leicester City FC v Manchester United FC - Premier LeagueGetty Images Sport

    8Diogo Dalot - 6/10

Had a few bad displays, chiefly away to Everton and at home to Tottenham, but on the whole Dalot has been reliable and versatile. Has had to play on the left more than was ideal, but remained consistent, adapting well to the role of wing-back when Amorim took charge.

He was brilliant in the 2-2 draw at Liverpool and stepped up against both Real Sociedad and Lyon at Old Trafford, meaning his future is secure, which is no mean feat considering the overhaul that is on the horizon.

  • Manchester United FC v Wolverhampton Wanderers FC - Premier LeagueGetty Images Sport

    7Noussair Mazraoui - 6/10

The Moroccan has proved to be a very shrewd signing at £13m ($17m) having played all over the defence and at wing-back, showing himself to be one of the few members of the backline who could be relied upon.

One of the few Ten Hag-driven transfers to have turned out well and the most reliable from a fitness point of view, playing the most games - although in an ironic twist, Mazraoui was forced off injured on the final day of the season.

  • FBL-EUR-C3-MAN UNITED-ATHLETIC BILBAOAFP

    6Casemiro - 6/10

Casemiro had a lot to prove after a woeful second season at United, and things got off to a dire start when he was scapegoated for the home thrashing by Liverpool, while he was then repeatedly overlooked by Amorim.

The Europa League, with its slower pace, became the Brazilian's saving grace and Casemiro re-established his role in the team, digging in with three assists to rescue the team from disaster against Lyon while putting in dominant displays against both Athletic Club and Real Sociedad. He has shown that talk of his demise was exaggerated and, barring an offer he can’t refuse from Saudi Arabia, he will stick around to see out his contract.

  • garnachoGetty Images

    5Alejandro Garnacho - 6/10

Given the exciting trajectory he was on heading into the season, Garnacho has had an underwhelming campaign, finishing with fewer goals and assists than in 2024-25. He missed his share of sitters, most memorably against West Ham, Tottenham, Lyon and Athletic Club, while also went almost four months without scoring either side of the New Year.

However, in a team so lacking in firepower and creativity, Garnacho always offered hope of making something happen and never stopped trying. That is why it felt harsh for him to not start the Europa League final and why forcing his exit feels like a huge risk.

  • Harry Maguire of Manchester United celebrates victoryGetty Images

    4Harry Maguire - 7/10

One of the few positive stories in United's season. Maguire continued his recovery from almost being forced out of the club in 2023 by remaining the most consistent defender in the team for the second consecutive season.

He found his place in Amorim's back three and became an unlikely saviour in attack; indeed, Amorim called him the best attacker from set-pieces. Maguire's last-gasp header against Lyon provided the most memorable moment of the campaign and one of the best in United's European history, while his skilful wing-play against Athletic Club was a close second. He also scored crucial goals against Porto, Leicester and Ipswich.

  • Olympique Lyonnais v Manchester United - UEFA Europa League 2024/25 Quarter Final First LegGetty Images Sport

    3Leny Yoro - 7/10

Yoro suffered an injury during very first pre-season appearance following his £52m ($70m) move from Lille, but his performances since February have shown United were right to spend big to beat Real Madrid to his signature.

He has grown as a defender, but it is his ball-carrying abilities that make Yoro stand out, and they came to the fore against both Real Sociedad and Athletic Club. As long as his foot injuries do not become regular occurrences, the 19-year-old should play a big part in the club’s future.

  • Amad Diallo Manchester United 2024-25Getty

    2Amad Diallo - 8/10

Amad showed Ten Hag how much he had undervalued him with a clinical display against PAOK under Van Nistelrooy that began a run of four goals and six assists, including sinking Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. He then underlined his talismanic quality with an equaliser at Anfield and a hat-trick against Southampton to save Amorim’s blushes.

Having emerged as a rare shining light from the season, Amad injured his ankle in February and was initially ruled out for the rest of season. At that point, it felt like all hope disappeared from the campaign, but the Ivorian's early return to both action and to form has given fans renewed belief amid the darkness.

  • Manchester United v Real Sociedad de Futbol - UEFA Europa League 2024/25 Round of 16 Second LegGetty Images Sport

    1Bruno Fernandes - 8/10

The best of a very bad bunch, Fernandes has kept United alive, and it is no exaggeration to say they might have actually been relegated were it not for him.

Not only did he finish the season as top scorer and assist provider, with 19 and 18, respectively, he was the driving force of the team and its flagbearer. His performance in the Europa League final was disappointing, but more often than not Fernandes carried the team on his back. If he does end up leaving for Saudi Arabia, he will be sorely missed and will depart with too few trophies to show for his efforts.
