Man City tipped to rival Liverpool for Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi as Premier League champions look to replace injured Rodri

City’s hopes for a robust title defence took a hit after Rodri, a key component in Guardiola's tactical setup, was ruled out for the remainder of the season due to injury. Since his absence, City’s control in the midfield has noticeably faltered, leading to the team’s pursuit of reinforcements ahead of the January transfer window.

During the summer transfer window, Liverpool were heavily linked to Zubimendi and appeared close to securing his services. The Reds were confident in their bid to bring him to Anfield, but Zubimendi ultimately decided to remain with his boyhood club, Real Sociedad. However, reports from the Spanish media suggest that City could take advantage of his £50.3 million (€60 million/$65.8 million) release clause - a figure well within the budget of the English champions.

Carragher, in his column for The Telegraph, also opined that the club’s midfield woes may accelerate their interest in Zubimendi.

"The void left by Rodri means City must consider the transfer market in January," he wrote. "I wonder whether they will try to succeed where Liverpool failed and lure Martín Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, the player whom top European scouts evidently feel is the best No 6 available beyond the Champions League clubs. Zubimendi is Rodri’s deputy in the Spain squad too."

However, Zubimendi has brushed aside the rumours, expressing his desire to stay in Spain, at least for the immediate future. In a recent interview, he addressed the transfer speculations, stating: "There are always rumours but until now I've always thought that the best solution for me is staying at Real Sociedad. I've still a lot of things to give to this club, I still want to grow and develop here."

City, currently trailing Liverpool in the standings, will return to Premier League action this Saturday with an away game against Brighton.
