The cost of Man City's dismal Champions League results revealed with Pep Guardiola's side in danger of early elimination

With each group stage win leading to a £1.77 million prize from UEFA, City's poor form in the competition this season means they have already missed out on a potential £6m of extra income from the Champions League, The Daily Mail reports. Their most recent loss in Europe came on Wednesday night, when a blunder from Ederson and a wonder goal from Weston McKennie saw City crash to a 2-0 defeat to Juventus in Turin.

More broadly, the 2023 Champions League winners have struggled to gain any momentum in the newly structured Champions League format. They've managed just two wins from their six matches so far, and those have come against Sparta Praha and Slovan Bratislava. A battering from Ruben Amorim's Sporting CP, a capitulation against Feyenoord and a defeat to Juventus have left them languishing towards the bottom of the table.

The Mail report adds that with two games left to play in the league phase, City could already have amassed a total of £10m from the competition but instead have just £4.5m in the bank as a result of their European performances. Meanwhile, if Premier League rivals Liverpool continue their 100 per cent record in the competition, the Merseyside club will end up bringing in a total of £22.9m from this stage.

Considering their previous record in the competition, City's 2024-25 Champions League campaign has been a disaster. However, there is still time to turn it around; as long as they finish in the top 24 Guardiola's side will reach the play-off round and gain a chance to progress further. City's next European fixture is a trip to Paris Saint-Germain, by no means an easy assignment. If they can come away with three points, it's highly likely their name will stay in the hat.
