  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Liverpool supporters have taken their long-standing rivalry with Manchester United to new heights by placing a cheeky billboard just a stone’s throw from Old Trafford. The stunt follows Liverpool’s latest Premier League triumph, which has seen them draw level with United on 20 league titles and, crucially, move ahead in the all-time honours tally.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Arne Slot has made an instant impression in his debut season at Anfield, guiding Liverpool to the Premier League title and lifting the club to new heights in the post-Jurgen Klopp era. Before the current season, both clubs sat on 67 major trophies. But Liverpool’s domestic title win now puts them on 68, overtaking United in the ongoing battle for historical dominance. Unsurprisingly, fans have wasted no time rubbing salt into the wounds of their fiercest rivals.

  • WHAT HAS BEEN SAID

The eye-catching campaign was masterminded by The Anfield Wrap (TAW), an award-winning Liverpool FC podcast known for its innovative fan engagement. The billboard, located along the A56 near United’s stadium, carries a stinging message aimed directly at their Mancunian rivals: “Manchester, just 37 miles to the country's most successful football club.”

  • DID YOU KNOW?

This isn’t the first time TAW has resorted to billboards to showcase the club’s accomplishments. Back in 2020, when Liverpool claimed their first league title in 30 years during the COVID-19 pandemic, TAW launched celebratory billboards across the UK and Ireland, giving fans something to rally around despite social distancing measures. Three years ago, they used a similar campaign to promote their five-part documentary series JÜRGEN, which chronicled Klopp’s rise from Mainz to Liverpool legend. Clearly, TAW has a flair for turning triumph into public art—and this time, United fans are the unwilling audience.

    WHAT NEXT FOR LIVERPOOL?

While the league title has already been secured, Liverpool’s 2024–25 campaign is not quite finished. Slot’s side will travel to face Brighton on May 19 before concluding their season at home against Crystal Palace on May 26. With the title race wrapped up and the bragging rights restored, attention now turns to how the Reds will further build under Slot’s leadership and continue widening the gap between themselves and Manchester United.
