Lerato Chabangu reveals why he rejected English giants Chelsea and ended up at Mamelodi Sundowns

Appearing on the reality show, I Blew It, the former Moroka Swallows star has revealed that he nearly joined Premier League side, Chelsea, before moving to Mamelodi Sundowns in 2005.Chabangu, a once fan-favorite star, who had a remarkable soccer career, stated that being too “young” at the time prevented him from going overseas to pursue his career. The 38-year-old insisted that, instead of signing for Masandawana, he could have joined 'The Blues' had it not been for his age.

WHAT HAPPENED

After showcasing his capabilities in the development structures of SuperSport United, Chabangu burst onto the professional scene at the University of Pretoria FC in the 2003/04 PSL campaign.Two years after his professional debut, he crossed town to join Mamelodi Sundowns in 2005, before moving to SuperSport United four years later on a loan transfer. At his peak, 'All Need Is Love', as the Tembisa-born midfielder is affectionately known, had also featured for Moroka Swallows and Chippa United before his career took a tragic turn.Chabangu found himself clubless in 2016, however, in trying to revive his career, he went on to play for lower-division teams, such as Mikhado, Pretoria Callies and Baberwa.

"That year was a busy year for me, I won many trophies at Tuks. I was scouted and moved to Chelsea while playing for Tuks. I realised that life was going to be good. I was ambitious enough to want to go that side,” he said on the reality show, I Blew It. "But I was young and had a lot of growing up to do. I went back to Tuks. After some time, I was called up for COSAFA, and while we were there, they said Sundowns wanted to sign me."I signed my contract in Mauritius. I remember my first game at Sundowns was at HM Pitje we were playing against Jomo Cosmos. I started on the bench, and when I came in, I scored two goals. I scored again in the second game, and I never got substituted that season at the age of 20.”

WHAT CHABANGU SAID? 

The former Bafana player hasn't officially hung up his boots, however, considering his age, there is a very limited chance of him returning to playing professional football.With many ex-footballers turning into coaches and analysts, perhaps and possibly, Chabangu could also go for one of the two careers.
