  • WHAT HAPPENED?

    The 2026 World Cup final will be held at New York/New Jersey's MetLife Stadium on July 19, 2026, FIFA confirmed on Sunday. It was widely assumed that Dallas' AT&T Stadium would be confirmed as the venue for the final but the Big Apple won out in Sunday's announcement.

    Earlier it was revealed that the USMNT will host their first game at Los Angeles' SoFi Stadium, with reality TV star Kim Kardashian making the announcement on a FIFA live stream.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

    The United States men's national team are set to play their World Cup opener on June 12, 2026, at the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, FIFA confirmed on Sunday. The 70,000-plus capacity venue is home to NFL teams the Los Angeles Chargers and the Los Angeles Rams. The stadium also hosted the Super Bowl 2022 final between the Los Angeles Rams and the Cincinnati Bengals.

    The iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City will be hosting the tournament opener on June 12, 2026. This will be the third time that Mexico will play host to the World Cup after the 1970 and 1986 editions.

    WHAT NEXT?

    For the first time in history, three nations, Mexico, USA and Canada will co-host the flagship competition. The tournament has also been expanded for the upcoming edition as 48 teams will compete instead of 32. The qualification rounds are already underway in Asia, Africa and South America.
