'I can play at the level I'm currently at' - USMNT, Crystal Palace goalkeeper Matt Turner reaffirms intention to stay in Europe, even with club woes

After a rollercoaster of a 12 months for his international and club career, USMNT goalkeeper Matt Turner still believes he's on track to find success at both levels - and that outside noise is no issue. The U.S. international lost his starting spot at Nottingham Forest in January 2024, and was ousted from the club this past summer.

He found a loan away, joining Crystal Palace on a 12-month deal through the remainder of 2025, but things haven't gone to plan there either. He's moved between the second- and third-string goalkeeper at the club, but internationally, still remains first choice with the U.S.

He started both matches under Mauricio Pochettino in October against Panama and Mexico, and heading into the November camp, remains No. 1 despite his lack of playing time at the club level. Now, heading into the first competitive matches for the USMNT under the Pochettino, Turner believes said that he's still at a high level.

Speaking at U.S. men's national team camp on Tuesday ahead of traveling to Jamaica for Thursday's leg one, Turner discussed the issues at the club level.

"I know I can play at the level that I'm currently at," he told GOAL. "It's just about finding that consistency, that opportunity, where I feel comfortable. I think for me, it's the approach, it never, never wavers. It's all about that mindset that you bring every day to get better, to understand that you need to learn to be more consistent, and work on the things... look in the mirror, and work on the things that you really need to work on to find that consistency.

"So I think I'm self aware to a fault. Sometimes I wish I could be one of those goalkeepers that could look at a play and think I couldn't do anything about that. I've never conceded a goal in my entire career that I thought, 'You know what? I couldn't have done anything about that goal, you know?' So I'm always trying to learn and improve, and that's the mindset that I bring to every single training session. And I'm sure my teammates can can attest to that."

The 29-year-old has made just one appearance at the club level since February, recently earning a start in the Carabao Cup in Oct. for Palace. In the match, he made seven saves en-route to a 2-1 victory for the Eagles.

Since Feb. 1, Turner has made just three appearances at the club level, all in Cup competitions. For Forest, he played twice in the FA Cup - once against Bristol City and once against Manchester United, and the recent cameo for Palace in the EFL Cup.

Turner and the USMNT clash with the Reggae Boyz Thursday in Kingston, Jamaica. Leg two of the affair will be in St. Louis on Monday, with the winner advancing to the semifinals next spring.
