GOAL's Culture & Clobber Axis: Naomi Girma becomes first million-dollar woman, Arsenal's 'Coat Guy'-inspired NPC jacket, new Nike Tiempos & more

Welcome to the Culture & Clobber Axis, where GOAL runs the rule over all the latest from the intersection of football and culture - from the sublime to the ridiculous, to what's fire and what misses completely.

January is finally drawing to a close, and by way of celebration we have plenty of new boots, a record-breaking new signing and some outstanding design work to reflect on, as well as some very dodgy refereeing.

But where do the week's biggest talking points from the football zeitgeist place in our comprehensive axis? Let's get into it...

Girma becomes first million-dollar women's player

Naomi Girma, history-maker. The USWNT baller has become the most expensive women's player of all time having completed a highly-anticipated move from San Diego Wave to Chelsea for £885,000 ($1.1m).

This is a watershed moment as the defender's supreme talent is recognised with a blockbuster fee, and this could certainly set a precedent now as we see more and more investment in the women's game.

    Michael Oliver's howler

We've seen some terrible refereeing decisions this season; some absolute stinkers; calls that make you want to tear your hair out and scream. But we witnessed the worst of the lot at Molineux on Saturday afternoon.

In the very same fixture that he boldly showed Arsenal's Gabriel Martinelli two yellow cards for two offences in the same phase of play almost two years ago, Michael Oliver gave Gunners youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly his marching orders for a cynical trip on the edge of the Wolves box. The VAR inexplicably backed the on-field decision, and Mikel Arteta's men were down to 10. Inevitably, the call - and PGMOL's bizarre backing - has caused uproar. Decisions don't come much worse than this.

Nike Tiempo Luxe & bonus bespoke jackets

It's two for the price of one as Nike drop their new Tiempo Luxe, which has been accompanied by two sublime bespoke jackets for Tiempo athletes Leah Williamson and Jamal Musiala.

The boot arrives in a lovely, deep burgundy colourway with the Nike 'Swoosh' in striking red chrome. To mark the release and taking inspiration from the new-look Tiempos, leading football retailer Pro:Direct has teamed up with London designer Antonia Bronze to bless the Arsenal and Bayern Munich technicians with custom leather jackets, including their squad numbers, initials and the number 94 on the back in a nod to the first-ever Tiempo. Very, very good.

    Ndiaye's bizarre yellow card

Oliver wasn't the only referee up to no good on Saturday; on the south coast, some good old-fashioned sh*thousing was needlessly punished by an overzealous Tim Robinson.

After coolly converting what proved to be a match-winning penalty, Everton's Iliman Ndiaye cupped his ear before flapping his arms like a bird in front of the Brighton supporters in reference to their nickname the Seagulls. Ref Robinson somehow took exception to this, booking the goal-scorer for inciting the fans. The game's never been more gone.

    CP Company x Bologna

A brand steeped in terrace culture, CP Company have announced a new football partnership a little closer to home following their deal with Manchester City earlier this season.

The Italian streetwear brand has revealed it has linked up with Serie A's Bologna, who have been competing in the Champions League for the first time in 60 years, and debuted their new gear pre-match against Borussia Dortmund last week. Founded in the city, this is a homecoming for the iconic label.

Le Coq Sportif files for bankruptcy

There's been some sad news surrounding one of the most iconic brands in sport in the past week, with Le Coq Sportif filing for bankruptcy.

The lesser-known French sportwear label, which manufactured the iconic shirt that Diego Maradona & Co. donned as they won the 1986 World Cup, has suffered significant losses despite an upturn in sales last year. Whatever happens next, Le Coq Sportif's legacy will live on.

adidas Predator Year of the Snake

adidas have continued to cook so far in 2025, and their prolific start shows no signs of slowing down with a new release to celebrate the zodiac ahead of Chinese New Year, which fell on Wednesday, January 29.

The German sportswear giant have dropped the Predator Year of the Snake, which of course arrives in an obligatory red and black snake print design with gold detailing. Keep your distance, these boots will bite.

  • Arsenal drop 'NPC' jacket

Arsenal Fashion Club are at it again. No, it's not April Fool's Day - the merch masters really have released what they are calling the 'NPC' (non-playable character) jacket.

'Coat Guy' caught people's attention last season after being spotted at various Arsenal games, always wearing the same flat cap and chore coat with the collar turned up, with some of his movements and mannerisms akin to a video game character's. Well, now you can get your hands on the same jacket, with the Gunners clearly keen to capitalise on his moment in the spotlight.

  • Antoine Griezmann DecathlonDecathlon

    Griezmann x Decathlon

You can keep yer Nikes, yer adidases, yer PUMAs - we're all about Antoine Griezmann snubbing the big boys to sign with iconic French outdoor brand Decathlon as his boot supplier.

The forward has already bagged nine goals in the KIPSTA CLR speed silo, and he will co-design more boots going forward as part of the partnership. Just like Harry Kane signing with Skechers, this feels like a hell of a coup and could be the start of a wave of sign-ups for Decathlon as they try to break into football big time.
