    WHAT HAPPENED?

Stanway suffered a tear to the lateral collateral ligament (LCL) in her knee during Bayern Munich training and has since undergone surgery. The Athletic have suggested that the 26-year-old could be out for three to four months and will likely not return to club action this season.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

As per the report, Stanway will be in a race against time to be fit for England's Euro 2025 campaign in Switzerland. Furthermore, it's likely she won't have participated in any competitive football in 2025 before the tournament, even if she is available for selection by then. As such, Lionesses boss Sarina Wiegman may have a big decision on her hands.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Stanway played in all six of England’s games at the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand as Wiegman’s side reached the final. She started four games and contributed one goal to the Lionesses' cause.

  • WHAT NEXT FOR THE LIONESSES?

Wiegman is already waiting on the return of key defender Alex Greenwood, who sustained a medial collateral knee ligament injury in December, while Lauren Hemp, Greenwood's Manchester City team-mate, recently underwent knee surgery herself. The Euros will kick off on July 2.
