Ex-Orlando Pirates & Mamelodi Sundowns star Teko Modise fears for his son - 'If football is in his blood... he will always be compared to me'

Teko Modise was a household name during his playing days for Orlando Pirates and eventually Mamelodi Sundowns among other teams. The former Bafana Bafana star remains a relevant figure in South Africa as far as football is concerned. It is normal to see sons of football legends also taking after their fathers in the game, but Modise has a different view.

WHAT HAPPENED?

"I wouldn't push him into football, if it is in his blood, then it is in his blood... It is not because of all the things I went through as a footballer, it is because of the pressure that he will be under," <a href="https://www.snl24.com/soccerladuma/local/premiership/orlando-pirates/teko-modise-why-i-wont-push-my-son-to-play-football-orlando-pirates-mamelodi-sundowns-20240516" target="_blank">Modise told the media</a>."He will always be compared to me. I have played with players that have been compared to their dads and I saw how it broke them. I saw how they were unable to be themselves and I don't want my son to go through that. It is okay when you are being compared to a defender, a striker, or a goalkeeper; you can get away with it," he continued. "But there are certain players in football in every generation that you will always have a problem being compared to them."I just fear that comparison and he might start resenting football if he doesn't reach the level that he wants to reach. But if it is in his blood, I am sure that I will be the first coach he ever has."

WHAT MODISE SAID

During his active days, Modise won the Premier Soccer League twice, the Caf Champions League, and the Caf Super Cup. The now 41-year-old was also part of the Bafana Bafana team that won the Cosafa Cup in 2007 and played in the 2010 Fifa World Cup. Modise won six other domestic cups in South Africa as well as several individual accolades like the PSL Footballer of the Year among others.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

It is interesting to see whether Modise's son will play football like him or opt for other disciplines in the future. Or maybe venture into entrepreneurship as Modise is now a businessman and owner of an agency called The Prestigious Group.
