A tough balancing act: Araújo's departure puts five defensive options on Barcelona's table

According to  Marca, "Araujo had confirmed on more than one occasion his desire to remain with Barcelona, so his departure surprised even some of his team-mates at the Catalan club. However, after Flick's position became clear, he preferred to take on a new challenge, joining Liverpool until June on a contract that runs until 2031."

Liverpool hold an option to buy the defender for around 50 million euros. The English club will also cover his entire salary, one of the highest at Barcelona, slashing the Catalan club's wage bill in the process.

Bags in hand, Araujo left the Joan Gamper sports city after bidding farewell to his team-mates and the club's staff. Then he headed for England.

Araújo's departure was never part of Barcelona's original plan, even if the possibility always lingered, not least because the player himself had little appetite for leaving. His exit, though, has forced a new reality on Flick and Deco.

The pair have started weighing up whether they need to sign a new centre-back, a move barely on the radar a few days ago given how well stocked the squad looked at the back.

At Flick's disposal are Pau Cubarsí, Andreas Christensen, Eric García, Koundé and Álvaro Cortés, plus Gerard Martín. Rodri, expected to join Barcelona, can also fill in at centre-back.

Yet Barcelona's ambitions for the 2026-2027 season, above all a serious tilt at the Champions League, are pushing the coaching staff towards more ready-made options. Christensen's injury troubles are a worry. Some of the other players still need time to develop.

The newspaper confirmed: "For this reason, Deco has resumed the search for a centre-back and has begun exploring the options available on the market. There are several names and profiles under consideration, but the final decision will depend on Flick's vision and the budget available to strengthen other positions the club considers more pressing."

Rodri and Julian Alvarez sit at the front of that queue. So does the money that could flow into the club's coffers from other deals, such as Ferran Torres's potential move to Paris Saint-Germain.

Any move for a new defender will hinge on the opportunities that open up in the market. Barcelona had, until recently, been working on other files before edging close to a deal for the Spanish midfielder from Manchester City.

Aymeric Laporte's name has surfaced in recent days as one option to replace Araujo, but no negotiations are under way between the two parties.

Marca continued: "The available information indicates that what took place was limited to a friendly meeting bringing together Laporte and his family with parties linked to Barcelona during the World Cup, while the Spanish defender remains one of the names admired by Deco and Flick."

The report went on: "Laporte is not the only name linked to Barcelona, as the names of Cristian Romero, Lukeba, William Saliba and Herrington have also emerged, but Deco also retains other options that have not yet been revealed."

It concluded: "Consequently, Araujo's departure has brought the centre-back file back to Barcelona's table, beginning a new phase of weighing up the technical need, the budget, and what the market can offer."
