Chelsea miss out as Barcelona announce club-record signing of Benfica star Kika Nazareth

Earlier in the week it was reported by Sport that Barcelona were closing in on a move for Nazareth worth around €500,000 (£424,000/$538,000). On Thursday, the European champions officially announced the transfer.

With Mariona Caldentey moving to Arsenal, Barcelona were in need of attacking reinforcements and few come better equipped to fill the void than 21-year-old Nazareth. The Portuguese star can play centrally or out wide and played a key role in helping Benfica win all four domestic trophies last season.

Nazareth becomes the most expensive player in the history of the women's team, surpassing previous world-record holder Keira Walsh and Ewa Pajor, who arrived in the summer from Wolfsburg.

Barca, who completed the quadruple last season, have already added England goalkeeper Ellie Roebuck and Pajor in the transfer window.
