    WHAT HAPPENED?

    Varga went down after appearing to collide with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn as they both tried to reach a free-kick delivery into the box, and Hungary's players immediately called for him to receive medical attention. The game was stopped for several minutes before the Hungary forward was stretchered out of the stadium with screens protecting him.

  • WHAT HUNGARY SAID

    The Hungarian football federation have released a statement confirming that Varga is "stable" and receiving treatment in hospital. "Barnabas Varga's condition is stable! The player is currently in one of the hospitals in Stuttgart," the social media statement reads. "We will inform you immediately if there is any news about its status."

    PLAYER REACTION

    A number of Hungary players were reduced to tears, including Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai, as the medical team eventually came to the aid of Varga on the pitch. Protective screens went up around Varga and TV cameras panned away from the box as fears began to grow for the well-being of the Hungary forward, who plays his club football for Ferencvaros.

    VARGA'S HUNGARY CAREER

    Varga made his debut for the Hungary senior team in March 2023, and has since earned 13 caps for his country. The 29-year-old has also scored seven goals at international level, with the whole football world now praying for his swift recovery.

    Hungary went on to win the game against Scotland 1-0 thanks to a dramatic stoppage-time winner from Kevin Csoboth. The final result saw Scotland eliminated from Euro 2024, while Hungary could still qualify for the round of 16 as one of the best third-placed teams.
