'Everyone was asking how' – GOAL Convo with Atlanta United’s Aleksei Miranchuk on Inter Miami, life in the U.S., 2025 MLS season

Aleksei Miranchuk is a hometown hero. The Atlanta United midfielder returned to Sloviansk-on-Kuban - a town of 50,000 in the southwest of Russia this winter. And just a month removed from his side beating Inter Miami in the MLS Playoffs -- an event that occurred multiple time zones and 6,000 miles away -- his friends and family treated him like footballing royalty.

"Everyone was asking 'how?' How it was there, how it was amazing, and all of those things. The whole world was following the game," Miranchuk told GOAL at MLS Media Day in early January.

It's a question that has been on most people's lips for months. Atlanta, remember, didn't have a full-time coach at the time. They were led by a 40-year-old goalkeeper in Brad Guzan and a marquee signing, Miranchuk, who had spent less than three months in the United States. Still, with Miranchuk's help, they beat Miami, 2-1, in a three-game series.

Since then, things have only improved. Miranchuk has settled in Atlanta, been welcomed by the fans, and prepared for the grind of a new season.

"From day one I felt a really warm welcome. As for the city, I really like it. It's so green, so natural, all of that stuff. The stadium speaks for itself," Miranchuk said.

And there's a lot to look forward to here. Since GOAL caught up with Miranchuk on January 8, new head coach Ronny Deila - who won an MLS Cup with NYCFC -has officially taken over. Striker Emmanuel Latte Lath and Miguel Almiron have arrived on a full-time deal. Suddenly, Atlanta is among the favorites, with Miranchuk pulling the strings at the center of it all.

Miranchuk joined GOAL Convo, a weekly Q&A with central figures in the American soccer scene,to talk about his adaptation to life in Atlanta, what that famous Miami win meant for his career, and where his team goes from here.

NOTE: This interview has been lightly edited for brevity and clarity. It was also conducted before Atlanta signed Almiron and Latte Lath.

    On 2024 MLS Playoffs

GOAL: I wanted to start with last winter. You upset Miami in the playoffs. Can you take me through those wins? How much did it mean to you?

MIRANCHUK: It meant a lot. We did a great thing, we beat the team with the star player. So it was a big thing. No one, I think expected that from us at the time. But that's why we love football or soccer because no one knows how a game will finish. So that's the beauty of the sport. Those experiences against these types of players across three games will always be in my heart. I will always remember them. After the season I went back to my hometown in Russia.

    GOAL: Were they watching?

MIRANCHUK: Everyone was asking "how." How it was there, how it was amazing, and all of those things. The whole world was following the game.

GOAL: You're a hometown hero now?

    MIRANCHUK: I guess so!

    ON LIFE IN ATLANTA

GOAL: I wanted to ask, how has Atlanta been so far for you? The City, the fans, that kind of thing?

MIRANCHUK: From Day 1, I felt a really warm welcome. As for the city, I really like it. It's so green, so natural, all of that stuff. The stadium speaks for itself. It's one of the best stadiums, one of the biggest. No matter what game there are 35,000-40,000 fans. They always come out to support you.

GOAL: You've also gone on record saying you like the music in Atlanta?

MIRANCHUK :It's a good city for music. I like Gunna, Da Baby, Young Thug, and Future

    ON THIS SEASON

GOAL: You have a new head coach this season. What are you expecting? What are the team's goals?

MIRANCHUK: Now I'm starting the season from the beginning. The main goal is to go further than last year and do better than the last year. It starts with every step and every game.

GOAL: And what's the key to doing that? Is it just finding consistency?

MIRANCHUK: It's all about consistency. We can't resist things and we just have to show our quality. So yeah, consistency is key.
