During this time, most of the team demanded early payment before Christmas and refused to participate in a match due to payment delays. As a result, the PSL had to cancel games against Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows, prompting a fine and a deduction of six points for the Soweto team.

The former Bafana Bafana international is one of the most decorated midfielders in the country, having won multiple PSL crowns with Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates, and has featured for Belgian side KV Oostende where he briefly worked with current South Africa national team coach Hugo Broos.His departure from Sundowns was not a kiss-and-say-goodbye type of exit, as he was clearly no longer in the plans of Rhulani Mokwena after he arrived at training having taken happy beverages.
