Alisson's injury to victory over Manchester City: The 10 defining moments in Liverpool's record-setting season

One of the biggest questions surrounding Liverpool heading into the 2019-20 season was whether they could improve on their poor record against the "big six", having won just one of their last 10 away Premier League games at those sides.

The Reds went to Stamford Bridge after starting the campaign with five straight wins and continued that run thanks to two first-half goals, with Roberto Firmino opening the scoring before Trent Alexander-Arnold powered home from 20 yards out.

It was not easy from there and Chelsea had a goal disallowed by VAR for offside before N'Golo Kante pulled one back, but Liverpool held on to maintain their 100 per cent record.

Fabinho became an integral part of Liverpool's midfield after signing from Monaco in summer 2018, establishing himself as a regular starter in October.

The Brazilian picked up where he left off at the end of last season, starting 11 of the Reds' first 13 Premier League games, but disaster struck when he picked up a ligament injury against Napoli in the Champions League in November.

Losing any key player can temporarily derail a season, especially after such an impressive start, but Liverpool refused to buckle and won all eight league games that Fabinho missed.

After 26 games of the campaign, Liverpool were romping to the title with a 19-point buffer over Manchester City and a game in hand on them.

That fixture saw West Ham visit Anfield and it looked to be business as usual when Georginio Wijnaldum opened the scoring, but the Hammers turned the narrative on its head to lead 2-1 with just 22 minutes left.

It was a scenario that previous Liverpool sides would have struggled to overcome, especially having suffered a 1-0 defeat at Atletico Madrid just days before, however Mohamed Salah's shot squirmed under Lukasz Fabianski before Sadio Mane netted the winner with just six minutes to go.

Newly-promoted Aston Villa were unbeaten in their last four home league games prior to this fixture and were just seconds away from making that five after Trezeguet's goal looked to have given them all three points.

Dean Smith's men held off Liverpool, who were below their best, until the 86th minute when Andy Robertson crashed home a header to at least preserve the Reds' 10-month unbeaten run in the league.

Another famous comeback was then completed deep into injury time when Sadio Mane flicked a header agonisingly past the outstretched arm of Tom Heaton to make it 10 wins from 11 games in the 2019-20 season for the Reds.

A rare midweek Merseyside derby prompted Jurgen Klopp to rest Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Jordan Henderson but it mattered little as Divock Origi enhanced his status as a cult Anfield hero by netting twice in a thumping 5-2 win.

The Belgian scored twice in the first 31 minutes to take his tally against Everton to five goals and helped Liverpool take a 4-2 lead into half-time, with Xherdan Shaqiri taking advantage of a rare start by scoring and Sadio Mane also netting.

Georginio Wijnaldum rounded out the result in the last minute of the game and although the Toffees never looked like getting anything out of the game, victory over a deadly rival will forever be important.

Liverpool's record against Manchester United in recent years does not make for pretty reading. Since taking over the club, Jurgen Klopp had managed just two wins in the 11 meetings prior to this clash in October 2019 and was yet to win at Old Trafford.

That run did continue here and also marked the first time the Reds failed to take all three points in the season, but it could have been much worse after Marcus Rashford opened the scoring for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side.

Klopp's men dominated possession but failed to really test David de Gea, and it took an unlikely hero in the form of Adam Lallana to rescue a point for the Reds with his first goal since May 2017.

Liverpool's second game against Manchester United was a much more comfortable affair than the 1-1 at Old Trafford, with Virgil van Dijk's powerful header in the first half settling nerves amongst the Anfield crowd.

The game could and perhaps should have been put to bed much earlier than it was but Roberto Firmino saw a strike ruled out by VAR, Jordan Henderson hit the post, and Mohamed Salah missed a glorious chance to break his duck against the Red Devils when he scuffed his shot from six yards out with the goal gaping.

United piled on the pressure in the closing moments but the result will live long in the home fans' memory after Salah carried the ball 60 yards and coolly slotted it under David de Gea with the final kick to put a deserved gloss on the scoreline.

Although Liverpool opened their campaign in style with a 4-1 win over Norwich City at Anfield, Alisson lasted just 39 minutes before a calf injury meant he was forced to go off and the Reds' season was already testing them.

Former West Ham goalkeeper Adrian took his place and retained the gloves for the next seven Premier League fixtures, with the six goals they shipped during that time fewer than any other side.

The Spaniard further endeared himself with fans by saving Tammy Abraham's penalty in the European Super Cup shootout, giving Liverpool yet another trophy in 2019.

Leicester City were one of the surprise packages of the first half of the season and were second in the league after 18 games. However, they ran into a Liverpool side on a mission on Boxing Day.

Trent Alexander-Arnold was - not for the first time - the star of the show with two assists and a goal as the Reds thumped the Foxes 4-0 at the King Power Stadium, with three strikes coming in the space of seven devastating second-half minutes.

It was certainly Liverpool's best performance of the season and one of their best ever under Jurgen Klopp, and the result was made even better when Manchester City lost at Wolves the next day meaning the Reds went 13 points clear.

Liverpool took just a single point from Manchester City last season and any such worries of a repeat were cast aside in double-quick time when the two superpowers met in October.

It was not without controversy as the visitors felt they should have had a penalty just 25 seconds before Fabinho opened the scoring in the sixth minute, although a VAR check ruled that Bernardo Silva handled the ball before Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Mohamed Salah headed home in the 13th minute and Sadio Mane made it 3-0 in the second half, with Bernardo Silva's late strike offering nought but consolation for Pep Guardiola's side and the result ensured Liverpool went eight points clear at the top.
