'It had to be done - Alan Shearer explains why Gareth Southgate was right to sub Harry Kane off for England against Denmark

Despite an early goal from Kane, England struggled to maintain their momentum and ultimately settled for a 1-1 draw. Morten Hjulmand's stunning long-range strike equalised for Denmark and as the second half unfolded, England's difficulties became more apparent. The team struggled to create clear chances and maintain possession.

Southgate decided to freshen things up and turned to his bench. Trent Alexander-Arnold was the first to be substituted, with Conor Gallagher coming on to bolster the midfield. Soon after, Southgate made a bold decision that caught many by surprise as the manager took off Kane and replaced the star striker with Ollie Watkins in the 68th minute.

Shearer, the former England striker and now a BBC co-commentator, supported Southgate's decision to replace Kane. "It had to be done,” Shearer said. “Harry was not affecting the game at all, he wasn't running in behind, everything was coming short. Similarly to Saka and Foden. It's been far too easy.”

Shearer praised Southgate for not waiting until the last minutes to make the changes, giving the substitutes enough time to impact the game.

“I’m pleased Gareth hasn’t waited until the last 10 minutes to do it, give them 20 minutes to try and do something in this game.”

England's unconvincing win against Serbia in their opener, followed by the draw against Denmark has raised concerns about their prospects in Euro 2024. While they remain on top of Group C, all four teams can still progress and the Three Lions must not lose against Slovenia on June 25 to progress into the knockouts.
