'Was it worth it?' - The Carli Lloyd that entered the National Soccer Hall of Fame is one the world had rarely seen - emotional, reflective, and human

From competitor to mother, Lloyd used her induction speech to share rare insight into her lonely journey to the top

Carli Lloyd has always been a competitor. She's always had a mentality that was cutthroat, disciplined, and often difficult to understand from the outside. The 42-year old was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame last weekend, recognized for her 17-year professional career that included two World Cups, two Olympic gold medals, an English FA Cup, as well as two FIFA Women's Player of the Year awards.

When most soccer fans think about Lloyd, they recall the relentless striker who carried the U.S. women's national team to multiple world titles. They think of a determined athlete who saw winning as the only option, and wouldn't let anyone, or anything get in the way.

The New Jersey native was known, in her prime, as a player who was hard to relate to. Her standards were incredibly high, training regimine secretive and elaborate, and focus seemingly narrow.

On Saturday, in Texas, the world saw a different side of Lloyd.

    An unexpected father-daughter moment

In 2007 when Lloyd was training for the Beijing Olympics, she had what she's described as a painful falling out with her parents. For the next 12 years, Lloyd wasn't part of family gatherings, celebrations, weddings and milestone moments. Lloyd won major tournaments, but didn't celebrate with family, instead hoisted the trophies with teammates and coaches.

Now, nearly 20 years later, Lloyd's father, Steve would present her the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame honor.

The juxtaposition of a family split apart with the presentation of a prestigious honor - and one for the very reason that led to the separation - was both beautiful and painful.

“These were difficult years for all of us, including Carli,” her father said. “We all continued to follow her career, and prayed for the day we would be back together. … Carli, you started this journey [as] a young girl with a dream. You achieved your dreams, and returned to us a dedicated and strong sister, wife, mother, and daughter.”

    In Carli's words

Lloyd offered a glimpse into a side of her many have long wanted to see - a more "human" side. Her 20 minute speech was unlike anything fans, journalists, teammates or friends had ever heard before. She was gentle, she was personal, and she was - above all else - emotional.

She had carefully thought about the message she wanted to send, and admitted that she didn't feel it was necessary to prove to the room how much she loved soccer - or how hard she worked.

"Most of you already know that about me," she said. "What I wanted to share wasn’t from a perspective of a competitor, but as a person, a human being.”

Lloyd weaved the theme of "Was it worth it?" throughout her speech. She questioned everything.

“As lonely and difficult as the journey was at times, I would do it all over again," she said. "There was nothing I loved more than winning. But winning comes at a cost, and I paid that price."

Lloyd said that she wished she'd let more people in during her playing days, let them understand her.

"I operated like an emotionless machine," she admitted. "I was intense, and I truly believed that the only way for me to survive in such a cutthroat environment was to be that way. So to my teammates, I want to say this: I’m sorry I wasn’t always able to give you all of me.”

She offered a thoughtful round of apologies to her family, teammates, and others who she neglected or impacted in her life. Even as she accepted such a great honor, she was selfless, offering personal insights few around her had ever heard. Being a mother, Lloyd's proudest joy, brought a sensitive manner to her voice. She acknowledged how becoming a mother changed her for the better.

Lloyd's career had several highs, but she was often closed off because of how she felt she needed to operate to reach the top. On this night, Lloyd celebrated a high filled with family, friends, teammates and supporters that have been waiting for her to welcome them in.

Lloyd is human, too, and ready to embrace that with open arms.
