The transfer activity surrounding the club tells the clearest story of De Zerbi's ambitions. Having already spent £237 million, the Italian told reporters the club is not finished in the market. New signing Mateus Fernandes, who arrived for £85 million, scored a stunning goal on his first appearance, giving fans an immediate sense of what the investment could deliver. A deal for Manchester City winger Savinho worth £65 million is also closing, adding further attacking depth.

The squad picture carries complications, though. Dejan Kulusevski and Mohammed Kudus were both left off the tour as they continue long-term injury rehabilitation, limiting De Zerbi's options in these early weeks.
