Despite being a three-time Player of the Year at SToK Racecourse and back-to-back promotion hero, Mullin has slipped down the pecking order in North Wales during the 2024-25 campaign. He has just five goals to his name across all competitions and has started only nine League One fixtures.
GettyPhil Parkinson further bolstered his attacking ranks in January, with records being broken in the process, and Mullin has been struggling to make matchday squads. That is despite being a man with 110 goals for the Red Dragons to his name.
Mullin is 30 years of age and needs to be playing regularly at this stage of his career. With that in mind, and Wrexham eyeing another step up the EFL ladder, it is being suggested that the prolific frontman will be moved on in the next window.
GettyThat is the opinion of former EFL player and manager Carlton Palmer, who has told Football League World: “Wrexham have a plethora of strikers right now, and Jay Rodriguez and Sam Smith are the two that are being chosen at the moment. Paul Mullin, who was out with an injury, is now falling down the pecking order.
“He’s an absolute legend at Wrexham. He’s scored over 100 goals for them, and has played a key part in their promotions from the National League to League One. The writing is on the wall. He remains under contract until 2027, but at his age I would have thought he wants to move on, and play regular football. I think it'll be in the interest of both parties.”
Ex-England international Palmer added: “He’s a legend of the football club, he’s done unbelievable, but Wrexham are moving at a tremendous pace and it’s going to be difficult for him with the strikers they’ve brought in, and with the strikers they have on the bench too, like Steven Fletcher and Jack Marriott.
“It’s going to be very difficult for him to get game-time and be in the squad. I’d be very surprised if Paul is still at Wrexham next season. He scores goals at that level. I’d be surprised if somebody doesn’t come along and make him a really good offer for him to get playing and scoring again. I expect him to move on this summer.”
Getty/GOALWrexham may decide to cash in on Mullin while still in a position to demand a sizeable fee from any sale. They have, under the guidance of Hollywood co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, made it clear that there is no room for sentiment while chasing down the ultimate goal of reaching the Premier League.
