Fenerbahce president implores Jose Mourinho to stay at the club amid typically tumultuous first campaign for iconic Portuguese manager

After being dismissed by AS Roma in January 2024, Mourinho returned to the dugout with Fenerbahce during the summer, embarking on a new chapter in the Turkish Super Lig. He has been outspoken about the challenges in the Turkish top flight and recently in a scathing remark, urged reporters to “speak the truth” about what he labelled as a “toxic” environment in the Super Lig.

Fenerbahce's form has also been dwindling as they remain eight points adrift of reigning champions Galatasaray - a gap that has fuelled doubts about their title hopes this season. However, the club president, Koc, has thrown his full backing behind Mourinho, emphasizing the importance of stability and long-term planning irrespective of current form.

Speaking to reporters, Koc underscored the club’s commitment to their manager and said: "Whether we are there or not, Jose Mourinho must continue in his duty. You said 'If you cannot be champions', we will continue on the path we believe in. As far as the coach is concerned, we will continue with the coach as long as we live. This issue of stability is very important. The man we brought has quality."

Koc’s endorsement of Mourinho signals a commitment to long-term planning, a rarity in modern football where immediate results often take precedence. The president’s remarks underline his belief that Mourinho’s proven track record and leadership qualities can ultimately elevate Fenerbahce to the pinnacle of Turkish football.

However, the challenge remains significant. They are set to compete in the Turkish Cup on Thursday, facing Kasimpasa in an away fixture. Four days later, they will turn their attention back to the Super Lig with a crucial league match against Konyaspor. These fixtures provide an opportunity for Mourinho to steady the ship and build momentum as Fenerbahce attempt to close the gap on Galatasaray in the domestic league.
