    Messi was handed a reunion in the last 16 of the Club World Cup as Inter Miami faced PSG, but things soon turned nightmarish as Neves gave the recent treble winners a sixth-minute lead before three quick strikes on the stroke of half-time made it 4-0.

    Fans were pining for Messi to leave Miami at half-time. Mazi Rafe wrote on X: "Messi please for the sake of your fans, leave Inter Miami before the new season 😭🙏🏽 what's this wacko?"

    Another fan, fendi, added: "I don’t get how Messi still wants to play for this team, offensively and defensively he’s playing with inept footballers. I guess he only cares about the Miami lifestyle and less about football now."

    Ibukun Aluko posted: "I hope Lionel Messi doesn’t come back for the second half. He doesn’t deserve this humiliation from PSG, Beckham , you will surely pay for this ..😭😭😭"

    Neves added his second of the game in the 39th minute before Tomas Aviles scored an own goal and Achraf Hakimi then bagged the fourth. Inter Miami had squeezed through to the knockout stages after a win and two draws in their group-stage matches but the first half of their last 16 tie showed Javier Mascherano's side truly out of their depth against Luis Enrique's European champions.

    WHAT NEXT?

    French champions PSG didn't add any more goals in the second half but it was still enough to seal their passage to the quarter-finals, where they will take on the winner of the tie between Flamengo and Bayern Munich.
