Klopp: Title chase not motivation
Jurgen Klopp's side entered the new year in a positive frame of mind, having claimed a notable victory over Manchester City and progressed into to the semi-finals of the EFL Cup.
They have, however, secured just one victory in their last eight fixtures, which came against League Two outfit Plymouth Argyle in a FA Cup third-round replay.
Liverpool have since tumbled out of that competition, while failing to make Wembley in the League Cup and dropping precious points in the Premier League.

Their energy levels having dipped ahead of a crunch clash with Chelsea at Anfield on Tuesday, with Championship side Wolves having shown last time out that holes can be picked in an out-of-sorts squad.
Luis Garcia, speaking exclusively to 888sport, said: "The intensity of the team was always high and that has been lacking the past couple of games.
"The pressure and pressing is not the same as it was a month ago. When the team goes forward it breaks a little bit, leaving a lot of spaces like we saw against Wolves.
"It leaves just three at the back and we now struggle against counterattacks. Teams know that and wait for the chances.
"The players are tired because of so many games. It is true that they have to change - but not that much because the players would be asking why after only a few bad results.
"They need to keep going the same way but maybe find someone who can help in the middle of the park because they are struggling there with all the injuries."
On the challenge posed by Chelsea in midweek, with the Blues currently eight points clear at the top of the table, the former Spain international added: "It is a difficult, difficult game especially how it has been these past few weeks but we cannot be worried about the title race because that was only possible for a short period of time.
"The target at the beginning of the season was to finish inside the top four. For that we need to worry because teams around Liverpool are only getting better."
Chelsea right to be wary of Liverpool
Liverpool have slipped to fourth in the Premier League table, 10 points adrift of Chelsea.
They are now just two points above Manchester City and four clear of arch-rivals Manchester United, with Champions League qualification far from guaranteed at this stage.
