Orlando Pirates' Richard Ofori sends apology after Ghana's dreadful Afcon outing, makes bold future pledge

<p>The Black Stars finished third in Group B to go home early from<a href="https://www.goal.com/en-za/africa-cup-of-nations/68zplepppndhl8bfdvgy9vgu1" target="_blank"> this tournament being hosted by Ivory Coast.</a></p><p>This was after they kicked off the tournament with a 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde before identical 2-2 draws against Egypt and Mozambique. </p><p>Ghana's performance triggered some anger from their fans and Ofori has moved in to explain what happened while asking for forgiveness. </p>

WHAT HAPPENED?

<p>"To the wonderful people of Ghana, I humbly extend my heartfelt apologies for our team’s performance at Afcon," Ofori wrote on social media.</p><p>"As a collective, we fell short. We gave our all in previous games, and it pains me that we couldn’t achieve the desired result in the end. </p><p>"I want to express our gratitude for your unwavering support and reassure you that we love God and are committed to learning from this experience.</p><p>"We promise to work harder, address our mistakes, and strive for a better outcome in the future. WHAT OFORI SAID

<p>At the age of 30, Ofori might still have a few years left in the Ghana national team set-up.</p><p>If he continues being called up, his focus would be achieving something with <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-za/lists/afcon-2023-ghana-s-squad-group-fixtures-players-to-watch-afcon-history/bltd849df307b0b5204#cs185907b71c04e17b" target="_blank">the underperforming Back Stars who last won Afcon in 1982.</a></p><p>Ghana will now look to qualify for the 2026 Fifa World Cup and Ofori would be hoping to be part of that bid.</p>

THE BIGGER PICTURE

<p>Ofori is back for club duty with Orlando Pirates after some time away on national team business.</p><p>After he captained Ghana in all their three Afcon games, he might have raised his hand to reclaim his place as the Buccaneers' number one goalkeeper. </p><p>After conceding six goals in three Afcon games, it is to be seen if he will rise from being a third choice to be considered ahead of Sipho Chaine and Melusi Buthelezi.</p>
