The Imphal boy had spent the early years of his career in Kolkata when he was part of the Pailan Arrows squad.

Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan are showing no sign of fatigue in the transfer market as they roped in young goalkeeper Soram Poirei for the season ahead.

The 24-year old shot-stopper, who has already played for five I-League clubs, is the second signing the Mariners have made in the last 48 hours, after striking a deal with promising winger Chesterpaul Lyngdoh.

Soram was last playing for DSK Shivajians in the I-League as a second fiddle to Arjuna awardee Subrata Paul, after enjoying limited playing minutes at the Indian Super League (ISL) franchise Delhi Dynamos. Kolkata is no new place for him as he had spent the early years of his career at the Indian Football Association (IFA) academy before being included in the squad of Pailan Arrows - the developmental side run by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) which was later disbanded.

In the last season of the youth side, Poirei became the first choice custodian, making 18 starts over the course of the league campaign. He has since been part of Bengaluru FC's I-League winning team and Aizawl FC's relegated squad.

Mariners' move for a goalkeeper comes as a natural consequence of their growing anxiety over first choice goalkeeper Debjit Majumder. The two-time best goalkeeper of the I-League has lucrative offers from all three big clubs of the city - East Bengal, Mohun Bagan and Atletico de Kolkata. With the ISL rules now clear, Debjit is one of the players Atletico will want to retain but the big two may want to match the monetary offer to entice one of the most sought after footballers of the country.

The Green and Maroons have already signed three foriegners - Kamo Bayi, Eze Kingsley and Ansumana Kromah and will look to win the Calcutta Football League (CFL) for the first time in eight seasons.

Shankarlal Chakraborty will oversee the proceedings for the local league while Sanjoy Sen - who has won an I-League and a Federation Cup in his three years at the helm of Mohun Bagan - will return to the dug-out for the national competitions.
