Commentary

Well, what a quarter-final that was! There's plenty more where that came from, and we'll see you for the next one. For now though, goodbye!
The impact of Wout Weghorst on this game was absolutely immeasurable. He was seemingly thrown on with the game lost, but he and Luuk de Jong disrupted a previously untested Argentine defence to snatch two late goals and level the contest. Weghorst, relegated earlier this year with Burnley, finished the match with two goals from his only two shots, and his only two touches in the box. He contested five duels, winning his only one in the air, and also made a crucial block at the other end to deny Fernandez a late winner.
It's all over, and Argentina squeeze their way home as they progress to the last four! The Oranje's late comeback, and the two goals from Wout Weghorst right at the very end looked to have swung momentum in their favour, but couldn't find another in the half-hour of extra time. Penalties inevitably came, and two wonderful Emi Martinez saves gave his side the advantage, with the Albiceleste edging a 4-3 victory in the shoot-out to set up a semi-final showdown with Croatia.
Dumfries is shown a second yellow card following an altercation in the aftermath of the winning penalty.
SCORES! Lautaro Martinez is up next, and fires the ball into the top corner to send Argentina into the last four! 4-3 is the score, and Argentina, after looking like they'd absolutely blown it, are World Cup semi-finalists again!
N. Lang
Yellow Card
Netherlands
Lang also goes into the book.
D. Dumfries
Yellow Card
Netherlands
Dumfries has his name taken by the referee.
SCORED!!! The Oranje are level! Luuk de Jong looks calm as he runs onto the ball, and remains so as he sends Emi Martinez the wrong way to lock us up at 3-3!
WIDE! Fernandez takes a long run-up to his kick, but the 21-year-old drags it beyond the reach of Noppert and wide of the post!
SCORED! Weghorst does the same to Emi Martinez, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way and keeping the Dutch in it at 3-2!
SCORES! Montiel steps up next, and sends Noppert the wrong way to make it 3-1 in Argentina's favour!
SCORED! Koopmeiners is next up for the Oranje, and the set-piece expert shows his prowess to get the Netherlands on the board with a cool finish. 2-1!
SCORED! Paredes lashes the ball right into the corner, giving Noppert no chance and putting Argentina 2-0 up!
E. Martínez
Penalty Save
Argentina
Emi Martinez comes to the fore again, pulling off an even better save this time!
SAVED AGAIN! Berghuis is next up for the Dutch, but like Van Dijk is denied, as Martinez guesses the right way to keep the scores at 1-0!
SCORED! Messi is first up for Argentina, and rolls the ball coolly into the back of the net, sending Noppert the wrong way, and putting his side 1-0 up in the shootout!
E. Martínez
Penalty Save
Argentina
That's some stop from Emi Martinez, who dived across brilliantly to deny Van Dijk there.
SAVED! Van Dijk steps up first for the Oranje, but can’t beat Emi Martinez, who guesses the right way to keep his spot-kick out with a brilliant save!
That's that for extra time, and we are going to penalties! Argentina dominated the last 15 minutes, but were just unable to find that all-important winner, and this quarter-final will be settled in the most uncomfortable way possible - from 12 yards!
120' + 1' FULL-TIME: NETHERLANDS 2-2 ARGENTINA
120' + 1' We're into a sole minute of added time, right at the very end of this game.
120' + 1' OFF THE POST! Another corner comes to the edge of the box, where Fernandez has another attempt at goal. This one flies through the crowd of bodies, and beats Noppert, but cannons back off the base of the post and bounces behind!
120' WIDE! Argentina recycle the ball once again and Di Maria finds Messi. He steps beyond his marker before firing a shot low, and a slight deflection takes it wide of the right-hand post.
119' SAVED! Fernandez squeezes a pass through to Lautaro Martinez, who turns Timber superbly before shooting. It's a good effort, but Noppert gets a strong hand to the ball and parries it away for a throw-in.
119' Berghuis breaks down the right for the Dutch, stepping beyond Tagliafico in the process. He floats a cross into the centre, but Emi Martinez catches the ball before anyone in Oranje can head it in.
118' The Oranje counter at speed and Lang curls a cross into the area. Emi Martinez races out to claim it, and does so under severe pressure from Weghorst.
116' Di Maria fires another corner into the middle for the Albiceleste, but Pezzella, arriving at the front post, can't keep his effort down.
115' BLOCKED! Argentina's latest corner is played back to Fernandez on the edge of the box, whose low shot on goal takes a wicked deflection off Weghorst, before looping over Noppert and onto the top of the net.
114' BLOCKED! Fernandez does well to pick up Di Maria's pass and beat Lang down the right-hand side of the box. He cuts the ball back to Lautaro Martinez, whose first-time shot is deflected wide by Van Dijk.
113' Gakpo's free-kick is met by Luuk de Jong at the far post, but he fouls Fernandez as he looks to create shooting space and concedes a free-kick.
N. Lang
C. Gakpo
Netherlands
113' Gakpo is brought off in a late, risky change by Louis Van Gaal, and Noa Lang will come on for the last few moments here.
G. Pezzella
Yellow Card
Argentina
112' Pezzella slides in on Gakpo, and despite getting some of the ball, brings Gakpo down awkwardly and concedes a yellow card-worthy free-kick.
Á. Di María
Lisandro Martínez
Argentina
112' Argentina make one last throw of the dice, bringing Lisandro Martinez off for Angel Di Maria to come into the attack.
110' OVER!!! Messi plays a one-two form the free-kick and cuts inside upon getting the ball back. He looks to find the top corner, but sends his curling effort over the bar.
G. Montiel
Yellow Card
Argentina
109' Montiel is nudged over by Gakpo to win a free-kick, but reacts aggressively and is the latest player to go into the book.
109' Ake allows a long ball to roll through to Noppert, but Messi chases hard and forces the goalkeeper into a rushed clearance that flies straight into touch.
107' Argentina win a corner which is whipped in by Messi, but Noppert has the ball in his clutches after initially juggling it slightly!
106' Argentina kick off the second period of extra time, and it's now or never for both of these sides to try and win it!
G. Montiel
N. Molina
Argentina
105' Argentina's first scorer Molina comes off at half-time in extra time, and Gonzalo Montiel will see out the game in his place.
The first period of extra-time ends, with the cagey nature of the first half of normal time returning to the fray. It's been passive from both sides so far, with each set of players clearly nervy after that high-octane end to the 90. We're 15 minutes away from penalties, folks, and the players will soon be taking that long walk, unless someone can conjure up some magic beforehand.
105' HALF-TIME: NETHERLANDS 2-2 ARGENTINA
104' CHANCE!!! Messi floats a free-kick into the box, with Otamendi advancing at the far post. He stretches to connect with all his might, but can't make contact with the ball as it flies behind!
103' Mac Allister drifts in-field and does well to keep the ball. He's eventually felled on the turn by Dumfries, winning his side a free-kick.
101' Argentina gain a free-kick and look to play advantage as Lautaro Martinez passes wide to Molina in space, but the referee brings play back for the set-piece, to the dismay of the Albiceleste faithful.
99' Frenkie De Jong's ball forward for Luuk De Jong allows the striker to spin away from Otamendi, but he's brought down late by the defender as the Dutch win yet another dangerous-looking free-kick.
97' Argentina have not attempted a shot since their second goal, and that change of playing style has certainly cost them - it's likely they'd be sitting pretty in the semi-finals if they hadn't!
95' Ake makes a burst forward and feeds Gakpo to his left. He cuts inside and curls a cross towards goal, which Emi Martinez leaves as the ball lands on top of the net.
93' Weghorst has become the first ever substitute to score a brace in a World Cup match for the Netherlands, and his presence will continue to be crucial for the Oranje in the next half-hour of extra time.
91' The Oranje kick off once more, and the first half of extra-time is up and running!
Well, how's that for late drama! Super-sub Weghorst's two late goals have granted the Oranje parity here, with Argentina, who looked home and hosed, pegged back from 2-0 up! We're set for another 30 minutes of extra-time now, and it's really anyone's game at this late stage!
S. Bergwijn
Yellow Card
Netherlands
90' + 14' Van Dijk is also booked for dissent, right at the end of a game this referee won't reflect on with too much fondness.
90' + 13' FULL-TIME: NETHERLANDS 2-2 ARGENTINA
W. Weghorst
Goal
Netherlands
90' + 11' GOOOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLL!!!!!!!! They have done it!!!! Shaping to shoot, Koopmeiners instead rolls the ball right next to the wall, where Weghorst takes a touch before slotting the ball into the bottom corner to make it 2-2!!! What drama in Lusail, and we're locked up and level with just seconds to play!
N. Otamendi
Yellow Card
Argentina
90' + 11' Otamendi's not happy with the goal, and the referee's not happy with him, booking the Albiceleste centre-back in the dying moments.
T. Koopmeiners
Assist
Netherlands
90' + 11' No one in this stadium expected Koopmeiners to try a ball like that, but Weghorst anticipated it brilliantly to level the match for the Oranje!
90' + 10' An optimistic ball is hooked to the edge of the Argentina box, but Weghorst is bundled over by Pezzella and Paredes right on the edge, giving the Oranje a late, late chance to score.
L. Messi
Yellow Card
Argentina
90' + 10' Messi is booked by the referee for dissent after arguing against the free-kick being given, and showing how nervous Argentina are about this chance.
90' + 9' Paredes' clever run forward results in a free-kick on halfway, and Argentina are in no hurry to take it. Messi chips the ball forward for Lautaro Martinez to chase, but it rolls behind for a goal kick.
90' + 7' Frenkie de Jong drops deep to punt a long ball forward, and it's met by his namesake Luuk, whose header bounces wide of the far post and behind.
90' + 5' The Albiceleste have absolutely packed their own box as Gakpo whips in another cross. Otamendi rises to head it clear, and is caught by Weghorst to gain Argentina a much-needed free-kick.
90' + 3' BLOCKED!!! Gakpo, Koopmeiners and Berghuis all stand over the free-kick, but the latter strikes it, and cannons the ball straight into the Argentine wall.
90' + 1' Gakpo is clipped in mid-air by Otamendi right on the edge of his own box, granting the Oranje a glorious shooting opportunity as the clock ticks down.
90' We've still got 10 minutes of added time to play, and if the first 90 or so are anything to go by, you won't want to miss them!
L. Paredes
Yellow Card
Argentina
89' It's all going off here!!! Ake fouls Paredes, who reacts by blasting the ball straight into the crowd on the Dutch bench. He's soon set upon by all of them and is barged over by Van Dijk, and the referee again has to wade in to separate the players, and books Paredes before the game can continue.
S. Berghuis
Yellow Card
Netherlands
88' Messi looks to duck and weave his way between Ake and Berghuis, but he's blocked off from his run by the latter, who is yellow-carded.
87' The Oranje have scored four goals in the last 15 minutes of the second half, with no team doing so more in this World Cup. With added time set to be plentiful, the Dutch still have plenty of time to make it five!
85' WIDE!!!! What an effort!!! Gakpo's ball into the box is headed back by Luuk de Jong, and Berghuis arrives late to rifle a stinging volley into the side netting! The ball took a small deflection as it flew through the air, meaning it's a corner to the Oranje!
S. Berghuis
Assist
Netherlands
83' Berghuis' ball into the box was exactly what Louis Van Gaal's side needed, and Weghorst's header will certainly see some fingernails chewed in the final few minutes!
W. Weghorst
Goal
Netherlands
83' GOOOOAAALLL!!! Hang on a moment!!! Berghuis curls a belter of a cross from deep and Weghorst races to the front post. His flicked, glancing header is an absolute peach, and bounces beyond Emi Martinez into the far corner! 2-1, and the Dutch are certainly back in this one now!
L. Martínez
J. Álvarez
Argentina
82' Alvarez hasn't found the net in this game, but has still been a crucial cog up front, and Lautaro Martinez replaces the Manchester City man up in attack.
80' Mac Allister surges forward and has Tagliafico wide to his left. He finds him, and the substitute crosses back in from the byline, but the ball is claimed and held by Noppert.
W. Weghorst
M. Depay
Netherlands
78' The Dutch make another attacking change, bringing on another tall, physical striker in Wout Weghorst to replace Depay up front.
G. Pezzella
C. Romero
Argentina
78' Romero also comes off for Argentina, and German Pezzella slots straight in at centre-back.
N. Tagliafico
M. Acuña
Argentina
78' Having won that potentially game-sealing penalty, Acuna comes off, and is replaced in the left-back berth by Nicolas Tagliafico.
77' Gakpo darts into the area, but goes down under pressure from Molina. The referee waves away any appeals though, and Argentina have the ball back.
Lisandro Martínez
Yellow Card
Argentina
76' The former Manchester United winger is joined in the book by a current Red Devil, as Lisandro Martinez is also shown a yellow card.
M. Depay
Yellow Card
Netherlands
76' Depay was heavily involved in that resultant scuffle, and as a result is shown a yellow card by the referee.
75' Emi Martinez and Luuk de Jong clash in the box after the Argentina goalkeeper plucks a cross out of the sky, and the referee has to step in to separate the two gigantic individuals, as well as a plethora of their team-mates!
L. Messi
Penalty Goal
Argentina
73' GOOOAAALLL!!!! Argentina double their lead!!! Messi steps up with all the calmness and composure we've come to expect, and buries his penalty right into the corner. Noppert is rooted to the spot, but Argentina certainly aren't, as they've got at least one foot in the semi-finals now!
71' PENALTY!!! Acuna dribbles into the box and looks to turn Dumfries, but is brought down by the Dutch defender's trailing leg, and the referee points to the spot as a result! Messi will step up for Argentina, with the chance to all-but seal their passage to the semi-finals!
70' The Netherlands have progressed from their last three World Cup quarter-final matches (1998, 2010, 2014), with their only defeat at this stage coming in 1994 against eventual winners Brazil.
68' Frenkie De Jong drives down the right-hand side as he looks to spark a Dutch response, but hits an off-balance pass to the edge of the box which is easily cut out by Paredes.
L. Paredes
R. De Paul
Argentina
66' De Paul comes off after another industrious performance in the middle of the park, and he's replaced by Leandro Paredes for the Albiceleste.
L. de Jong
D. Blind
Netherlands
64' The Dutch look to the skies as they bring off Blind for towering PSV striker Luuk de Jong, who will certainly provide them with more of an outlet to aim at up front.
63' OVER!!! How close! Messi steps up to take the free-kick he won, and whips the ball over the wall, and beyond Noppert, but over the bar as it brushes the top of the net and rattles the rear stanchion!
61' Molina cuts in-field and charges forward, feeding De Paul. He lays it off to Messi, who saunters through the middle once more before being bundled over by Van Dijk right on the edge of the box!
59' Here come Argentina as the leaders flood forward in numbers. Mac Allister has De Paul in acres of space to his right, but the final pass is a poor one and the Atletico Madrid midfielder slips over trying to make something of it!
57' The Dutch have still only managed a singular shot, their lowest at this stage of a World Cup game since 1966.
55' Messi is penalised for a blatant handball on halfway as he contests a bouncing ball with Ake, but somehow avoids a booking!
53' Lionel Scaloni's side have stopped the opposition from scoring a first-half goal in all five of their games so far in Qatar. No team has done this more at this World Cup, while the last time Argentina did the same, in 1990, they reached the final.
51' CHANCE!!! Argentina power forward and De Paul slips a pass in behind Ake for Messi to chase. The captain does so, but Noppert races off his line to smother the ball before he can latch onto it!
49' Gakpo beats his man down the byline and crosses from the right, but Emi Martinez claims the high ball before anyone in Oranje can.
48' Argentina win the first corner of the second period, and Messi whips the out-swinger into the box. Mac Allister rises at the front post to glance a header across goal, but it skews wide and the Dutch recover possession!
46' Messi resumes proceedings for the Albiceleste, and the second half is back underway here!
T. Koopmeiners
M. de Roon
Netherlands
46' De Roon is also withdrawn, replaced in midfield by Teun Koopmeiners.
S. Berghuis
S. Bergwijn
Netherlands
46' The Netherlands make two half-time changes, with Bergwijn being replaced by his namesake Steven Berghuis.
The teams return for the second half, and can the Netherlands improve up front in order to get back into this game?
Messi's mesmerising run and pass for Molina's goal is the difference at the moment, and the PSG forward was excellent throughout. One of his two shots was on target, while he's made an assist with his only key pass. He's won two of three duels, with the goal coming from his only successful dribble, while he's maintained an 80 per cent passing accuracy in the final third, as well as winning a free-kick. Untouchable.
The first half ends, with Argentina edging things on the scoreline thanks to Molina's opener. Messi, as ever, played the crucial role in setting up that goal, in a half which has otherwise been sparse of quality. The Dutch are yet to have a shot on target, while Argentina have also been limited in the final third, but with the deadlock broken, the game could well open up in the second half as these two fight to advance to the semi-finals.
45' + 5' HALF-TIME: NETHERLANDS 0-1 ARGENTINA
45' + 3' De Jong's ball from deep is met by Gakpo on the edge of the box, and he sends a looping header straight into the gloves of Emi Martinez.
W. Weghorst
Yellow Card
Netherlands
45' + 2' The referee again heads over to the bench to calm tensions, showing a yellow card to Netherlands' substitute striker Wout Weghorst.
45' + 1' SAVED!!! Gakpo whips a free-kick into the Argentina box, which Emi Martinez does well to claim and hold. The Dutch claim Ake was fouled for a potential penalty, but to no avail from the referee or VAR.
45' + 1' We're into five minutes of added time at the end of the first half.
C. Romero
Yellow Card
Argentina
45' Depay looks to flick the ball over Romero's head, but the centre-back wildly sticks out an arm, which the ball hits, and rightfully receives a yellow card.
M. Acuña
Yellow Card
Argentina
43' Acuna is also shown a yellow card for the incident, ruling him out of the semi-final - should Argentina get there, of course.
J. Timber
Yellow Card
Netherlands
43' Timber is clipped by Acuna on the touchline and reacts poorly, pushing the Argentina full-back to the ground. The referee spots this, and promptly books the Dutch defender.
42' Only Diego Maradona, with eight, has provided more assists than Messi's seven in the World Cup. Good company!
40' SAVED!!! A loose ball is latched onto by Alvarez, who surges down the left before passing inside to Messi. He holds off his marker to keep possession superbly, before turning and firing a right-footed shot into the gloves of Noppert.
39' Argentina have scored in their last seven World Cup games, with Messi marking his 24th appearance at the finals with his second assist at the 2022 edition.
37' De Paul goes down in midfield after a clash with De Roon, but the box-to-box Albiceleste man is soon back to his feet, to the relief of his team-mates and fans.
L. Messi
Assist
Argentina
35' Molina's finish was really well-taken, but what about the assist from the little magician?! Messi's turning, dribbling and awareness to find his team-mate was untouchable, and another moment of brilliance from him puts his side into the lead.
N. Molina
Goal
Argentina
35' GOOOOOAAAAALLL!!!!! There is the breakthrough for the Albiceleste!!! Messi drops a shoulder and darts through midfield, before threading a pass through the eye of a needle into the box. Molina latches onto it and steps beyond Blind, before stabbing the ball beyond Noppert to put Argentina 1-0 up!!! That's what we've been waiting for!
33' SAVED!!! Argentina advance down the right through Mac Allister, who squares inside to Messi. He lays the ball off to De Paul, whose first-time shot is easily held by Noppert.
Yellow Card
31' The referee halts play to address the Argentina bench, and brandishes a yellow card for Lionel Scaloni's assistant coach Walter Samuel!
30' De Paul looks to play a few one-twos and advance through the midfield, but the organised and watertight Dutch defence prevents him from progressing into the 18-yard box.
28' Nearly half an hour played, and we're yet to see a shot on target from either side. The last two games between these sides at the World Cup have finished 0-0, remember, and the early signs suggest we may be set for a treble.
26' Depay has been involved in 34 goals in his last 30 appearances for the Netherlands in all competitions, scoring 24 and assisting 10.
24' WIDE! Depay and Bergwijn link up well to move the ball forward, and the latter tries his luck, but drags his effort well wide of the target.
22' OVER!!! Messi glides through the Dutch midfield before taking aim from the edge of the box. The defence stands off him, but the Argentina playmaker can only send his effort curling over the top.
21' Depay looks to turn Otamendi, and wins the game's first corner, but Gakpo's ball in is a poor one which is easy for the Albiceleste to clear.
20' Van Gaal is unbeaten in his 11 World Cup matches as a manager – if Netherlands avoid defeat in this game, he will equal Luiz Felipe Scolari's record of 12 games without defeat from the start of a World Cup managerial career.
18' Timber arcs a throughball forward for Bergwijn to chase, but Emi Martinez is out of his goal to gather the ball before he can get there.
16' Depay's cross from the left is volleyed back across the face by Dumfries, but Blind is beaten in the air by Romero and Argentina clear.
15' Argentina have been eliminated from three of their last four World Cup quarter-final matches, though they did win their last such match against Belgium in 2014. In each of the three World Cup quarter-final matches they've progressed from, they've ended up reaching the final (1986, 1990 and 2014).
13' Acuna floats a clever ball forward to the byline, which is kept in play by Mac Allister. He hooks a cross back into the area, but there's no-one there to connect and the Netherlands survive once more.
12' Since losing the 1930 final against Uruguay, each of Argentina's last nine eliminations from the World Cup knockout rounds have come against European nations, including a 2-1 loss to Netherlands in the 1998 quarter-final, and 1-0 losses to Germany in the 1990 and 2014 finals.
10' De Paul's cross from the right is headed clear as far as Messi, who feigns shooting before spreading it wide to Acuna. There's blue and white shirts aplenty to aim at, but the wing-back drills his cross beyond everyone and the Dutch clear their lines.
8' A pass out from the back by Noppert is inches away from being cut out by Alvarez, but it rolls beyond his boot and safely wide to Timber.
7' The last two World Cup meetings between these two sides have each finished 0-0, in the 2006 group stages and the 2014 semi-final, with Argentina progressing on penalties from the latter.
5' Depay loses the ball and Argentina fly forward. Molina's ball in from the right is deflected away, but De Paul follows in and his half-volleyed effort is blocked by Ake.
3' This is the sixth World Cup meeting between Netherlands and Argentina, with only Brazil against Sweden and Argentina against Germany (both seven) being played more often in the competition.
1' Gakpo kicks off for the Dutch, and this clash of clashes is underway in Lusail!
The teams make their way onto the pitch, and the crowd is poised and ready ahead of this mouth-watering quarter-final in Qatar!
The Albiceleste also make one change, but it’s a defensive one, with Gomez withdrawn for Lisandro Martinez. He’ll form part of a five-man back-line, while Julian Alvarez and captain Lionel Messi, who both scored against Australia, will make up the front two, looking to do similar damage to the Dutch rearguard.
Cody Gakpo has been the Netherlands’ main man so far this tournament, but didn’t get on the scoresheet against the US as his strike partner Memphis Depay scored the opener. The Dutch’s sole change - Bergwijn in for Klaassen - sees Gakpo move into the middle of the front three, with Depay and Bergwijn on his left and right flanks respectively.
ARGENTINA SUBS: Franco Armani, Geronimo Rulli, Juan Foyth, Nicolas Tagliafico, Gonzalo Montiel, Leandro Paredes, German Pezzella, Angel di Maria, Exequiel Palacios, Angel Correa, Thiago Almada, Alejandro Papu Gomez, Guido Rodriguez, Paulo Dybala, Lautaro Martinez.

These two sides reached the last eight with varying degrees of difficulty, the Dutch breezing past the United States with a 3-1 victory. Argentina, however, had to overcome a late fightback from Australia to sneak a 2-1 win over the Socceroos.
The winners of this game know who they’re facing in the semi-finals already, and it’s likely not who either were expecting, after Croatia produced another nail-biting penalty shoot-out victory to topple favourites Brazil in the first of the quarters.
Hello, and welcome to live coverage of this FIFA World Cup quarter-final, as the Netherlands and Argentina face off for a place in the last four.
