Wrexham's promotion hopes given huge boost as Andy Cannon & Paul Mullin on target in win over Grimsby Town - and it's League Two leaders Mansfield Town at SToK Racecourse next!

Wrexham made the perfect start by opening the scoring after just five minutes. Cannon blasted a powerful low effort past goalkeeper Harvey Cartwright from the edge of the box to make it 1-0. The midfielder was celebrating again on the 36th minute after neatly finishing off a flowing counter to double the visitors' lead. There was even time for another goal before the break, captain Paul Mullin swivelling in the penalty area and sending a left-footed volley into the net.

Wrexham had more chances after the break but Eoghan O'Connell fired over the bar and Mullin also wasted an opportunity after rounding the goalkeeper. Grimsby did manage to pull one back late on when Arthur Gnahoua cut inside and fired a shot past Arthur Okonkwo but it was to prove only a consolation for the hosts as the Red Dragons moved up to second in the table.

Mullin's goal was his 18th of the season for Wrexham and his 97th in total for the Welsh side.

This promised to be a tricky fixture for Wrexham but Cannon's early strike settled any nerves and put the visitors on the front foot almost from the off. His second goal will live long in the memory of Wrexham fans as it started from inside their own half. Mullin rode several challenges before feeding Tom O'Connor down the right. His ball into the box was met beautifully at the near post by Cannon, who smashed across goal and into the far corner.

Grimsby fans have had plenty to cheer in recent weeks, with the team heading into Saturday's encounter on a six-match unbeaten run that saw the Mariners concede just three goals along the way. Yet that all changed on Saturday as Wrexham hit three without reply in the first 45 minutes. Striker Mullin also got his revenge after being booed by sections of the home support, with the 29-year-old effectively finishing off Grimsby with Wrexham's third of the match to end the hosts' recent good run and leave them still only six points off the bottom.

The win is a huge boost for Wrexham who face League Two leaders Mansfield next in a crunch clash for both sides. The two teams meet on Good Friday at the SToK Racecourse, with Parkinson's side starting the match just three points behind Mansfield, who dropped points earlier in the day.
