USMNT U20 World Cup 2019Getty Images

Tim Weah, Sergino Dest and what happened to the 2019 USMNT Under-20 World Cup squad

The goal of a youth national team is simple: to push players toward the senior team. However, even in the best of cases, everyone knows that only a few select players from any age-group will ever truly make an impact at the senior level.

Because of that, projecting the future of an Under-20 team is quite difficult. They're much closer to the senior level than say, the U17s, but, at the end of the day, the hope is that three, maybe four, of the players involved can become legitimate senior contributors. If you do that every time, your pipeline is in good shape, with each ageing generation being replaced by a younger one on the conveyor belt.

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, this summer is the first time in four years that teams have gathered for an U20 World Cup. And, because of that, we're blessed with a bit of hindsight when it comes to the U.S. team that competed in the 2019 tournament in Poland.

That team, famously, defeated France in the last 16 before falling to Ecuador in the quarter-final. It's also a team that provided something of a backbone for the senior squad that competed at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. In total, 11 players that featured that summer have earned senior USMNT caps, but a few have actually taken their talents elsewhere.

Where are they now, and how many of the 2019 U.S. U20s have truly made a difference in the years since? GOAL takes a look...

  • Brady Scott FC KolnGetty Images

    Brady Scott

The starting goalkeeper that summer, Scott hasn't yet broken through in MLS and has yet to appear in American soccer's top flight. After playing for FC Koln's second team for a few years, he's bounced around stateside, signing with Nashville SC, Austin FC and, most recently, the Columbus Crew.

  • Dest USMNT 2022Getty

    Sergino Dest

You cannot understate how important this U20 experience was for Dest. When the Netherlands came calling after his breakthrough at Ajax, Dest stayed loyal to the USMNT, citing the relationships built during his time with the youth national team. In the years since, Dest has become a mainstay for the senior side and was the first-choice starter at right-back in Qatar, with 25 total caps to his name.

He faces some competition this cycle due to a disastrous loan spell with AC Milan, but, at 22, Dest is still likely the USMNT's right-back of the present and future.

  • Chris Gloster 05302019ProShots

    Chris Gloster

After a few seasons with Hannover and Jong PSV, Gloster returned to the U.S. to join New York City FC, where he made 20 appearances in two seasons. However, the club bought out the defender's contract ahead of the 2023 season, leaving him as a free agent.

  • McKenzie USMNT 2022Getty

    Mark McKenzie

The then-Philadelphia Union defender has developed nicely since his time with the U20s. Now starring for Genk in Belgium, McKenzie narrowly missed out on the squad for Qatar, but figures to be part of the center-back pool as the 2026 World Cup cycle truly begins this summer.

A recent unlikely goalscoring surge has him back in the picture, and McKenzie should be confident whenever he next joins up with the USMNT. He has 11 total caps to his name and was a part of the 2019-20 CONCACAF Nations League winners, although he did have a rocky final against Mexico.

  • Chris Richards 2022-23Getty

    Chris Richards

Another player that narrowly missed out on the World Cup squad last fall. Injuries have proven Richards' undoing at Crystal Palace after signing from Bayern Munich, as the defender has struggled to lock down a regular role in the Premier League.

However, there's still hope that he can be one hell of a center-back for the national team going forward as he looks to add to his eight USMNT appearances.

  • Chris Durkin, Dave Kasper, D.C. United, 06142016D.C. United

    Chris Durkin

The D.C. United product is back with his former club after a two-year stay with Sint-Truiden in Belgium. The 23-year-old midfielder is a key piece of Wayne Rooney's plans, although he has never broken into the USMNT picture. He returned six assists and a goal in 29 appearances last season, and has featured in each of D.C.'s 13 games to start the 2023 MLS season.

  • 20230217 Julian AraujoGetty Images

    Julian Araujo

A player that has broken through on the senior level, but not with the USMNT. After earning one senior cap with the U.S., Araujo made the one-time switch to Mexico in 2021 and has earned six caps for El Tri thus far. He's one of only three players to play for both the U.S. and Mexico at senior level, joining Martin Vasquez and Edgar Castillo.

Previously a mainstay with the LA Galaxy, Araujo joined Barcelona B this winter after a prolonged transfer saga.

  • Alex Mendez USMNT U20s Poland 2019Getty Images

    Alex Mendez

The LA Galaxy youth product won the Golden Ball at the CONCACAF U20 Championship in 2018. He moved to Europe shortly after, joining Freiburg and then Ajax, where he played for Jong Ajax in the second division. Mendez is now with Portuguese side Vizela, where he's been a regular since joining in 2021.

  • Sebastian Soto USA World Cup U20Getty

    Sebastian Soto

The striker has two USMNT caps and two goals to his name via a brace against Panama, but Soto isn't really near the striker player pool right now. An ill-advised move to Norwich City led to years of loan spells, only for Soto to finally move on to sign with Austria Klagenfurt ahead of the 2022-23 season. He's scored just one goal in nine appearances for the Austrian side.

  • Pomykal USMNT 2019Getty

    Paxton Pomykal

A player right on the edge of a USMNT breakthrough. The FC Dallas star has earned three USMNT caps, most recently featuring against Mexico in the Continental Clasico in April. A 2019 MLS All-Star, Pomykal is a vital piece of FC Dallas' team and could challenge for a midfield spot this cycle.

  • Timothy Weah United States USMNT Wales World Cup 2022Getty

    Timothy Weah

Alongside Dest, the big success story from this team. Weah has 29 senior caps and four goals, and was a key piece of the USMNT rebuild under Gregg Berhalter. Weah scored the USMNT's first goal in Qatar, with his darting run against Wales welcoming the U.S. back to the global stage. He was the starter throughout the tournament and figures to be in the mix for the same role under whoever takes over as head coach this summer.

At club level, he's already lifted league titles with Paris Saint-Germain, Celtic and Lille.

  • David Ochoa USMNT U20s 11032019

    David Ochoa

An absolute lightning rod for controversy during his time in MLS, the goalkeeper established himself as something of a villain during his time with Real Salt Lake before featuring for D.C. United and Atletico San Luis in Mexico.

Although he was called in for senior camps in 2020 and 2021, Ochoa made the switch to Mexico in August 2021, playing for the U21s shortly after. He earned his first El Tri call up from Tata Martino in April 2022, but has not made a senior appearance.

  • Keita CrewGetty

    Aboubacar Keita

A Columbus Crew homegrown, Keita made somewhat consistent performances for the club and was part of their 2020 MLS Cup-winning team after being a regular for the U.S. U20s. At the tournament, he started all five games in midfield in a more defensive role.

He was traded to the Colorado Rapids in January 2020, but tore his ACL shortly after and was out for the entirety of the 2022 MLS season.

  • Cerrillo FC DallasGetty

    Edwin Cerrillo

Another FC Dallas product, Cerrillo has become a more regular player for his local team. After bouncing between FC Dallas and North Texas FC from 2019-21, he's been a mainstay for the former since, racking up 78 total appearances in MLS.

  • Matthew Real Philadelphia Union 2022Getty Images

    Matthew Real

Part of the Philadelphia Union pipeline that has been so successful, Real has played a small role for his hometown team during their rise. In total, he's made 44 MLS appearances for his local club, but only 15 of those have been starts.

  • Brandon Servania USMNT U20s 05292019Getty Images

    Brandon Servania

Once again, an FC Dallas product, although the midfielder is now a regular under Bob Bradley in Toronto FC.

Servania, who actually trained with Bayern Munich for a bit in 2021, has earned one USMNT cap, featuring in a January camp win over Costa Rica in 2020. Later that year, he was called up by Puerto Rico, but rejected the invitation, leaving him still eligible for the U.S. should he ever play his way onto their radar.

  • De la Fuente USMNT 2021Getty

    Konrad de la Fuente

Another player with USMNT experience, although he has fallen on tough times at club level. The Miami-born winger came up at the Barcelona academy, and even made three appearances for the Blaugrana in 2020-21. He was sold to Marseille the next season, making 23 total appearances but scoring just one goal. He joined Olympiacos on loan this past season, but didn't make much of an impact with the Greek giants.

With the USMNT, De la Fuente has earned three caps, with two of them coming in 2021.

  • Llanez USMNT 2019Getty

    Ulysses Llanez

Llanez has earned three USMNT caps and has a goal to his name, having scored the winner in a 1-0 win over Costa Rica back in 2020. Later that year, he was named to the USMNT squad for a pair of friendlies against Wales and Panama.

At club level, he's still contracted to Wolfsburg, but has spent the past season with St. Polten in Austria on loan.

  • Rennicks New England revolutionGetty

    Justin Rennicks

After several loans to the lower leagues, Rennicks started to make his mark in MLS in 2022, playing 19 total games for the New England Revolution. In total, the forward has scored four goals in 39 total appearances in all competitions for the Revs.

He's been something of a regular off the bench to start the 2023 season for his club, making nine appearances, with eight coming as a substitute.

  • Ledezma PSV 2022Getty

    Richy Ledezma

Ledezman has made sporadic appearances with PSV, but is now on loan with New York City FC as he looks for consistent minutes at age 22. The midfielder has jumped right into the NYCFC lineup, but could remain in PSV's plans after making 23 appearances for the Dutch giants across three seasons prior to his MLS loan.

Internationally, Ledezma drew interest from Mexico at one point, but remained with the U.S., earning his first call ups to the senior team in November 2020. During that window, he provided two assists for Soto in a win over Panama.

  • CJ Dos Santos USMNTGetty

    CJ dos Santos

After six years with Benfica, the goalkeeper joined up with Inter Miami in 2022 and has primarily featured for the club's reserves. During his time with the Portuguese giants, though, Dos Santos earned a USMNT call-up in 2020, but did not feature.

  • Ayo Akinola - USAGetty Images

    Ayo Akinola

A bit of a forgotten member of this team as he was forced to pull out due to injury. The Toronto FC homegrown earned one senior cap for the U.S. after dominating at both the U17 and U20 levels. He made his debut with a goal against El Salvador in December 2020, but his time with the U.S. didn't last long.

He was called up by Canada in 2021 and filed a one-time switch that summer. Cruelly, he ruptured his ACL against the U.S. at the 2021 Gold Cup, but has since returned, earning four total caps with Canada.
