Throwback Thursday: Remember when Maurice Edu wrapped up the SPL for Rangers with a last-gasp winner over Celtic?

There have been many famous incidents in U.S. soccer history. From vital goals to crucial saves - and everything in between - the sport has far more of a pedigree in the States than many realize. And some of the best moments have come abroad, with U.S. men and women standing out on the European stage when it mattered the most.

Maurice Edu, long-time Rangers midfielder and USMNT stalwart, provided a massive one 14 years ago.

It wasn't a very good goal. But that won't matter. It certainly didn't to the man who scored. Edu only found the net four times over the course of the 2009-10 campaign, but one of those four was perhaps the most important of Rangers' season.

And for Edu, it was a defining moment. The USMNT midfielder won three Scottish Premier League titles, but his European career never truly took off as it perhaps should have. Still, in the scope of USMNT successes in Europe, that tap in will always be remembered. Here's a look back at that moment, and what it meant in this edition of... Throwback Thursday.

  • What happened?

Rangers were struggling to find a breakthrough in a testy Old Firm when they earned a corner in the 92nd minute. Madjid Bouguerra fired the ball goalwards, and saw his effort spilled by the keeper. A mad scramble ensued. Arthur Boruc made a smart stop, but the ball fell to Edu, who bundled it over the line and sent a tense Ibrox into raptures.

The goal put Rangers 10 points clear atop the SPL with a game in hand, all-but sealing the title before the end of February - the champagne moment in a remarkable season.

  • Why it mattered

Rangers, famously, were on the brink of financial collapse at the time. In 2009, it was estimated that the club owed up to £30 million to Lloyds Banking Group. They needed every single possible penny from on-field success.

And that Old Firm could have been pivotal. Rangers needed Champions League football - and the £12 million in cash that would come with it. At the time, only first place in the SPL would guarantee a spot in the competition. Without the boost, there were serious worries as to whether the club would be able to survive.

So, that game, a meeting of first and second in the league, ultimately decided the fate of the season. A Rangers' loss - or even a drab 0-0 - could have seen the momentum swing Celtic's way. The win more or less sealed it.

Edu, meanwhile, continued a memorable campaign.

    From those who were there

Edu described it as one of the best moments of his career.

"It was probably the easiest goal I've scored because it was a tap in, but probably the most important," he said. "It was just pure elation and I went on a full sprint but my legs were so tired so I wasn't moving very fast! The celebrations of joy on everyone's face, the fans going just absolutely crazy.

"One of the sweet parts about that is when I finally got off the ground, jogging back to get ready for kick off I'm looking around the stadium and just seeing everyone go bat s*** crazy."

Club Chairman Dave King would later highlight it as a vital point in club history.

"The club was in emotional turmoil at the time of that Old Firm game," he said. "[Manager] Walter Smith was battling to get 11 players plus two on the bench and there had been no money, even for loan deals. That's why Edu's goal was the highlight of the season as the title was so crucial.

"If there had been a swing in momentum at that stage the whole thing could have collapsed. It was clear negotiations with the bank would be much more pleasant if we could secure Champions League football."

    What came next

Edu's Rangers career rather faded away from there. While temporarily healed, the Scottish champions' financial woes eventually deepened, and the club went into administration in 2012. Edu was one of a glut of regulars to be moved on as a result.

And while his best days in Europe had passed, Edu remained relevant for the USMNT. He remained a regular for Jurgen Klinsmann, and returned to the U.S., first for the Philadelphia Union and later for USL's Bethlehem Steel.

But for Edu, that moment will live on, as the day in which he broke Celtic hearts.

"I look at the far end goal and that's where the Celtic section was," he said. "It's just doom and gloom. Everyone with their heads down, faces tucked into their hands absolute silence. It was a beautiful moment."
