Serie A to be reduced? AC Milan, Inter & Juventus push for Italian top-flight to be cut down to 18 teams

The idea to reduce the size of the Serie A was first floated by FIGC President Gabriele Gravina and now ANSA reports that three Italian giants Juventus, AC Milan and Inter are also backing the idea of reducing the number of teams in the league.

The report further claims that Juventus general manager Maurizio Scanavino, Inter CEO Beppe Marotta and AC Milan president Paolo Scaroni met Gravina via video conference where the three representatives showed their approval of the federation chief's decision.

The trio, along with the FIGC, though, are set to face competition from Lega Serie A who are ready to fight the idea of lowering the number of clubs.

Serie A did have 18 teams competing up until the 2003/04 season when the number of teams in the league was increased to 20. The idea behind going back to the old system is to reduce the packed fixtures and make the league more competitive.

The game week 24 of the Serie A began on Friday when Empoli beat Salernitana. This week will also witness a clash between Inter and Roma on Saturday while Juventus and Milan take on Napoli and Udinese on Monday and Tuesday, respectively.
