    WHAT HAPPENED?

The former England manager has been without a job since leaving Leeds after the club's relegation from the Premier League last May. Now, Allardyce has joked that if approached, he would happily replace Mauricio Pochettino at Chelsea, with it his belief that the Argentine is failing to address the most glaring weakness in the team.

  • WHAT SAM ALLARDYCE SAID

Speaking on talkSPORT, Allardyce was asked if he would be willing to take over as Chelsea boss, to which he jokingly replied: "Oh yes, I'd fly back from Dubai tomorrow for that – get me there!"

He then added on where the Blues have been going wrong this season: "Sort the defence out. It's the worst defending I've seen in the Premier League for a long, long time. People see that as a negative punt. There's a big thing on Monday Night Football about Manchester United and how many shots they've conceded and then looking at the top teams like Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal. They have the best defensive records. It's a simple mathematical equation. You win the league if you have the best defence not the best attack.

"The best attack gives you the opportunity to get the points in the end but the defensive side of it wins you the league. The defending has been ignored for many years now and I’ve never seen such bad defending for a long time."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Former Tottenham coach Pochettino has struggled to find success since returning to the Premier League at Chelsea. The Blues are currently 11th in the Premier League, and lost 1-0 to a second-string Liverpool side in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday. As pointed out by Allardyce, the West London club's major weakness has been their backline as they have leaked 41 goals in the league in 25 games.

    WHAT NEXT FOR MAURICIO POCHETTINO?

There has been plenty of speculation regarding the Argentine manager's future at Stamford Bridge, with some reports suggesting that if the Blues fail to secure a European spot, the 51-year-old could see his contract ripped up one year early.

For now, he remains focused on progressing to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup as his side are all set to take on Leeds on Wednesday.
