'Not the impossible job!' - Ruben Amorim insists he believes in Man Utd players but sets out two key areas where they must improve

Amorim is the sixth permanent manager to take charge of the Red Devils since Sir Alex Ferguson retired. Many of his predecessors such as Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho and Erik ten Hag had enjoyed great success elsewhere prior to moving to Old Trafford but all of them were dismissed before completing three years in the dugout.

"No, of course it's not [impossible]. Call me naïve but I believe I am the right guy in the right moment. I truly believe I am the right guy," Amorim told a press conference. "I really don’t know what the biggest challenge is, I will find out during these months. You have here different types of coaches, the guys that won everything like Van Gaal and Mourinho, the new ones that knew the club inside out like [Ole Gunnar] Solskjaer then one of the best outside the top five leagues in Ten hag. We have to improve as a club and acknowledged we have to win games. You have different coaches, the same results. We will try to do the INEOS way, my way."

Ten Hag was sacked after United lost four of their nine opening Premier League games and although interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy steadied the ship in his four games in charge, the performances underlined the fact that Amorim still faces a huge task in getting the team firing again. He insisted, however, that he believes in his new squad.

"I am a little bit a dreamer and I believe in myself and I believe in the club, I think we have the same idea, the same mindset and that can help," he said. "I truly believe in the players also. I think we have room to improve and I want to try new things. You guys think it is not possible, I think it is possible."

Despite his positive message, Amorim admitted there were two areas where the team must improve: fitness and running back to defend.

He said: "I think we have to improve the physical aspect of the team. I think we lose the ball too often, we have to be better at running back, I think that is clear to everyone and I think we have to be better on the details. We have to improve on the small things. In the small things, I think I can help a lot."

Amorim takes charge of his first game as United boss on Sunday when the Red Devils visit Ipswich Town. The coach did not set any specific targets but he said he should be given at least two years to prove that he is the right man for the job. He added: "I don’t know how long it will take, I know if you are in Manchester United you have to win games, so I will not tell you I need a lot of time. It is a great league, the strongest in the world and we have to improve a lot. We have to win games and then to win titles.

"I have two years and a a half of contract. I think two years you can understand if I am the right manager to go in this process. We will need more time, if you look to the clubs who are winning this league, they are doing this process for a long time. I understand we will need more than two and a half years, we have to win something, somewhere but in two years you can understand if you want to continue this path or change."
