<p>After a stellar performance for Spain at the European Championship, several top European clubs had shown interest in signing Williams including giants like <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/lists/revealed-why-barcelona-failed-sign-nico-williams-guarantees-athletic-club-star/blt2f8842bd31e1d257#cs1fc279aa1bfc6dc2" target="_blank">Barcelona</a>, <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/lists/nico-williams-arsenal-gunners-all-out-beat-barcelona-psg-signing-athletic-club-attacker/blt64638565159fb63c#cs322a75bf76db4a45" target="_blank">Arsenal </a>and Chelsea, however, the young winger <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/lists/nico-williams-athletic-club-stay-amid-approaches-barcelona-target/blt7d6442bb78a47dc1#cs9ecb4643a9e4f6ea" target="_blank">decided to stay back at Athletic Club</a>. </p>

WHAT HAPPENED?

<p>The 22-year-old's current contract expires at the end of the 2024/25 season and while The Lions are likely to offer a new and improved deal to their star attacker, the Spain international is yet to confirm if he is planning to stay back beyond the current campaign. </p>

THE BIGGER PICTURE

<p>In an interview with <a href="https://as.com/futbol/nico-williams-copio-jugadas-de-mbappe-y-dembele-son-unicos-n/" target="_blank">AS</a>, the Spain international was asked if he is planning to put pen to paper on a new deal to which the winger said, "I am happy in Bilbao, I have decided to stay here. It is incredible to see the atmosphere that was created after the game against AZ."</p>

WHAT NICO WILLIAMS SAID

<p>It remains to be seen if Catalan giants Barcelona - who were favourites to sign Williams in the summer - can finally rope in the attacker next season for free. The player will be next seen in action on Sunday as Ernesto Valverde's side take on Girona in La Liga. </p>
