Man Utd Player Ratings 2022-23GOAL

Man Utd ratings: Every Red Devils player's performance in the 2022-23 season - ranked

Manchester United got back to where they feel they belong this season, or at least closer to it. Erik ten Hag has overseen the club's instant return to the Champions League and delivered a first trophy in six years during his first campaign in charge.

He also ensured the team were competitive in all competitions, reaching the final of the FA Cup and doing themselves proud in their narrow defeat by Manchester City, while making it to the quarter-finals of the Europa League, beating Barcelona on the way.

There have also been some wonderful individual performances. Marcus Rashford has had the best season of his life, Bruno Fernandes has been remarkably consistent while Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro have been wonderful new signings.

There have also been a few shockers - we're looking at you David de Gea - and some horrendous defeats, such as the 7-0 thrashing by Liverpool and the shock 4-0 beating by Brentford. But overall it has been a positive season that fans will look back on fondly.

GOAL rates United's players after an eventful and exciting campaign...

  • Jack Butland Manchester United 2022-23Getty

    28Jack Butland - N/A

Didn't play a minute of football after joining on loan from Crystal Palace in January.

  • Donny van de beek CadizGetty Images

    27Donny van de Beek - 2/10

The midfielder had had a torrid two seasons at the club and it was no case of third time lucky. He got very limited action despite having the best moments of his career under Ten Hag at Ajax, and just when it looked like he could get more regular football after the World Cup, he suffered a season-ending knee injury against Bournemouth.

  • Anthony Elanga Manchester United 2022-23Getty Images

    26Anthony Elanga - 3/10

Given very few opportunities after breaking through to the first team last season, but when he did get a chance he struggled to make an impact, scoring no goals and providing only two assists in 10 matches in all competitions.

He is likely to leave either on loan or permanently in the summer, which is a shame considering all the excitement around him last year.

  • Martin Dubravka Manchester United Aston Villa 2022-23Getty Images

    25Martin Dubravka - 3/10

Made just two appearances in a United shirt in the Carabao Cup before being recalled from his loan by Newcastle. That meant he was cup-tied and not allowed to play in the final against the Red Devils, but did at least earn a winners' medal.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo Manchester United 2022-23Getty Images

    24Cristiano Ronaldo - 3/10

The Portuguese wanted to leave United in the summer and his attitude stank from the beginning, missing pre-season training and then leaving the friendly against Rayo Vallecano at half-time.

He produced one flash of brilliance to grab the winning goal against Everton, but when he started against Newcastle and Aston Villa, he was ineffective. United's best performances came when he was not in the line up, such as against Liverpool and Tottenham, while Ronaldo left the latter early and refused to come on as a late substitute.

He finally got his wish in November, sulking his way out of the club with the help of his controversial, publicity-seeking interview with Piers Morgan. United have thrived without him and barely noticed his absence.

  • Wout Weghorst Manchester United 2023Getty Images

    23Wout Weghorst - 4/10

Many fans were baffled when he joined on loan as Ronaldo's replacement and their fears were justified. He couldn't score a single Premier League goal despite making 17 appearances, including 10 starts, and his glaring miss in his final home match against Fulham summed up his hapless spell with the club.

He did at least work hard and endeared himself to fans with his antics in the FA Cup semi-final against Brighton, but he was ultimately never good enough to play for Manchester United and was only signed as the club had no money left to spend. Just two goals in 31 appearances across all competitions says it all.

  • Harry Maguire react Manchester United Sevilla second leg 2022-23Getty Images

    22Harry Maguire - 4/10

The arrival of Martinez put him under pressure from pre-season, and after poor performances in the opening defeats by Brighton and Brentford, he went 10 weeks without starting a league game. Recovered some pride in the cups but was left out of the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle, albeit coming on as a substitute to lift the trophy.

The injuries to Varane and Martinez gave him a ticket back into the first team, but after a nightmare display in the 3-0 defeat at Sevilla, he lost his place to left-back Luke Shaw, a highly embarrassing situation for the club's official captain to endure.

A big decision awaits in the summer as his England place becomes endangered the longer he stays out of Ten Hag's thinking.

  • Facundo Pellistri Manchester United 2022-23Getty Images

    21Facundo Pellistri - 4/10

The Uruguayan has had few opportunities in his debut season with the first team, making 10 appearances and only one start. But when he has got on the pitch, he has looked exciting, bringing pace and unpredictability.

  • David de Gea Manchester United 2022-23Getty

    20David de Gea - 4/10

The Spaniard may have won the Golden Glove for the most clean sheets in the Premier League and overtaken Peter Schmeichel as the United goalkeeper with most clean sheets, but overall it was a season to forget.

It began with two huge errors in the 4-0 drubbing at Brentford and he kept making costly mistakes, gifting three goals to Sevilla, one to Everton, one to West Ham and ending the campaign in the worst way possible with a feeble performance against Manchester City in the FA Cup final.

His declining abilities as a shot-stopper make his glaring shortcomings in playing out from the back even worse, and even if he ends up signing a new contract, United will have to go into the market for a goalkeeper to provide competition for him next season.

  • Kobbie Mainoo Manchester United 2022-23Getty

    19Kobbie Mainoo - 4/10

The Stockport-born midfielder is United's next great hope from the academy and was named Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year for his performances for the Under-21 side.

He was given a smattering of first-team chances while still 17, starting against Charlton in the Carabao Cup and making two substitutes' appearances as well as going on the mid-season training camp to Spain and playing in two friendlies. A big pre-season awaits him.

  • Jadon Sancho Manchester United Sevilla second leg 2022-23Getty Images

    18Jadon Sancho - 5/10

Sancho has shown glimpses of the player United paid Borussia Dortmund £74 million for in 2021, most notably with his goals against Liverpool and Tottenham. But he has also experienced serious crises of confidence, leading Ten Hag to take him out of the squad altogether for more than two months.

He managed to win his place back in the side in March and keep it, but he was still a highly frustrating player to watch, making many nice touches and passes but rarely being decisive, often slowing down United's play by taking one touch too many. But at least he has a platform from which to build in his third season.

  • Diogo Dalot Manchester United 2022-23Getty Images

    17Diogo Dalot - 5/10

Lost his place in the team to Wan-Bissaka due to his inferior defensive abilities, although got a brief run at left-back when the injuries piled up. Showed promise as an attacking full-back but struggled too often defensively, particularly at Anfield, while he was hauled off at half-time in the Carabao Cup final.

To the surprise of many he was handed a new contract in May, a vote of confidence for the future. But he needs to start delivering on a regular basis next season.

  • Scott McTominay 2022-23Getty

    16Scott McTominay - 5/10

The arrivals of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen led to McTominay making only 10 Premier League starts, his lowest since the 2018-19 season, and niggling injuries dealt him a further blow.

He scored a vital opening goal against Everton in early April when no one else seemed capable of finding the net, but that proved to be his last start due to injuries. Was inches away from equalising against City in the FA Cup final but headed over the bar.

An honest and hard-working player, but the fact he became so prominent in the last three years speaks more of United's decline than his ability, and he has little future in Ten Hag's side.

  • Marcel Sabitzer Manchester United Sevilla 2022-23Getty Images

    15Marcel Sabitzer - 5/10

The Austrian was an emergency loan signing in January after Christian Eriksen's ankle injury and proved a useful if unremarkable squad player. He made 11 starts and was a good link between attack and midfield, with his biggest performance coming in the first leg against Sevilla, when he scored two fine goals.

The fact that the game ended up being remembered for United's collapse in the final 10 minutes summed up his ill-fortune, and his progress was also interrupted by several injuries, with a knee problem ending his season in early May.

  • Tyrell Malacia Manchester United 2022-23Getty Images

    14Tyrell Malacia - 5/10

Made a strong start to life with the club and usurped Shaw as first-choice left-back at the start of the season. His inexperience soon showed though, and he lost his place to the England defender.

The Dutchman made a huge mistake against Sevilla at Old Trafford, turning his back and letting the ball run which left to the Spaniards scoring and turning the match around, paving the way towards United's elimination from the Europa League. Made another costly error against Tottenham and must improve next season if he is to challenge Shaw again.

  • Antony 2022-23Getty

    13Antony - 6/10

Antony made a flying start to life at Old Trafford, becoming the first new signing in the club's history to score in his first three league matches by netting against Arsenal, Everton and Man City. He then went on a six-month scoring drought in the Premier League, ending it against Nottingham Forest, when he also got his first assist in the league.

He ended the season with as many assists in the Eredivisie as in the Premier League (two). He turned it on against Barcelona and Real Betis and in most games did good defensive work, but his one-footedness is a problem. As the club's second-most expensive player ever at £85m, he has a lot of work to do next season.

  • Anthony Martial Manchester United 2022-23Getty

    12Anthony Martial - 6/10

When he was on the pitch, the French striker often delivered, averaging a goal for every two starts. The problem was that more often than not, he could not get on it. Martial missed a total of 29 matches - just under half of United's total games - with a variety of afflictions, and in his final league match tore his hamstring, ruling him out of the FA Cup final.

His prolonged absences forced Ten Hag to keep playing Weghorst, and when Martial did return he looked a class above the ungainly Dutch striker. But he still lacked the power and pace of old and the better sides worked out how to deal with him.

  • Fred 2022-23Getty

    11Fred - 6/10

The Brazilian made the fewest number of Premier League starts in his five seasons at United, but the highest number of appearances. He was actually better suited to being a squad player and mostly did well when called upon.

Ten Hag valued his energy and commitment and picked him for some crucial games, including the FA Cup final. The highlight was his equaliser against Barcelona, but the lowest moment was an abysmal display in the 7-0 hammering by Liverpool.

  • Victor Lindelof Manchester United 2022-23Getty

    10Victor Lindelof - 7/10

Marginalised for much of the season as Varane and Martinez were Ten Hag's first-choice pairing, but he kept a professional attitude and took his chance when it came due to injuries to the Frenchman and Argentine.

Performed consistently in the final six weeks of the season and was particularly impressive in the FA Cup semi-final against Brighton. Showed he is worth keeping as a squad player.

  • Christian Eriksen 2022-23Getty

    9Christian Eriksen - 7/10

The fact Eriksen has been able to revive his career and become an important player for Manchester United barely a year after suffering a cardiac arrest on the pitch is a fairy-tale story.

The Dane has formed United's strongest midfield axis with Fernandes and Casemiro and is one of the team's best passers. He has struggled to last 90 minutes, but given he arrived on a free transfer and what he has been through in the last two years, it has been a hugely impressive first season at Old Trafford.

  • 20230402 Luke Shaw(C)Getty Images

    8Luke Shaw - 7/10

The arrival of Malacia put him under real pressure and he lost his place to the Dutchman at the start of the season. But he eventually rose to the challenge and regained his place by becoming one of United's most consistent performers.

He also thrived as a makeshift centre-back, performing better in the role than Maguire and became one of United's main choices for taking set-pieces. He was rewarded with a new four-year contract in April and has reaffirmed his position as one of the most important players in the side.

  • Garnacho(C)Getty Images

    7Alejandro Garnacho - 8/10

The Argentine is the fans' new idol despite making only a handful of appearances. Almost every time he has come off the bench, he has made an impact. He scored a breathtaking first Premier League goal to snatch victory at Fulham and was also decisive against West Ham, Wolves and Manchester City.

His progress was cruelly disrupted by an ankle ligament injury in March just as he was starting to show what he was made of, but he has looked unaffected by his time away since he has returned. The mere sight of him warming up gets supporters off their feet and he was the team's best hope of an equaliser in the FA Cup final. Next season will be a big one for him.

  • Aaron Wan-Bissaka Man Utd 2022-23Getty Images

    6Aaron Wan-Bissaka - 8/10

His future was on the line after he was barely picked for the first few months of the campaign, but he came out fighting after the World Cup, reaffirming his ability for one-v-one defending and making United much more solid at the back.

Ended the season as the first-choice right-back over Dalot and is one of the players to have shown the biggest improvement under Ten Hag.

  • Raphael Varane Manchester United 2022-23Getty

    5Raphael Varane - 8/10

Varane found the defensive partner he craved with the arrival of Martinez and had a much better second season with the club as a result.

Rediscovered the form he had shown at Real Madrid, reading the danger superbly and launching many a counter-attack immediately after winning the ball back. Also managed to stay fitter and mostly injury-free compared to his debut campaign.

  • Bruno Fernandes Manchester UnitedGetty

    4Bruno Fernandes - 9/10

This was the season when Fernandes showed his true leadership qualities and proved his worth. The Portuguese played all across the pitch to suit whichever role needed to be filled, performing admirably in defensive midfield, attacking midfield and on the right of the attack.

He also showed remarkable resistance to pain by playing 59 of United's 62 matches, including starting against Tottenham despite being seen on crutches just days before. And he scored 14 times while providing 13 assists, only trailing Rashford in goal contributions.

  • Lisandro Martinez Man Utd 2022-23Getty

    3Lisandro Martinez - 9/10

A 5'9 player from Ajax might not have seemed like the ideal solution to United's defensive woes at the time, but Martinez's arrival has made the team far more solid and was one of their most important players until fracturing his metatarsal in April against Sevilla.

The Argentine has compensated for his lack of height with superb skills in bringing the ball out from the back, ensuring United are far more confident in possession. He has has also been a key leadership figure in the dressing room and the team have badly missed him while he has been out, losing four of the 12 matches since his season-ending injury.

  • Casemiro Manchester United 2022-23Getty

    2Casemiro - 9/10

One of the best signings of the season in the Premier League and United's most influential player along with Rashford. Casemiro has been a colossus in midfield, breaking up play, adding power and dynamism as well as providing many touches of class - just look at his bicycle kick against Bournemouth.

The five-time Champions League winner has also transformed the team's mentality and become one of the leaders in the dressing room, helping Ten Hag raise standards even further.

He needs to ensure he gets suspended less often next season after missing eight matches this, while Ten Hag could also give him the occasional rest to ease the burden on his body. He may have cost the club more than £60m -a lot for a now 31-year-old - but it has been money very well spent.

  • Marcus Rashford Man Utd 2022-23Getty Images

    1Marcus Rashford - 10/10

Finally free from his crippling back injury and boosted by an intense strength and conditioning camp over the summer, Rashford has produced the best football of his career. Many doubted whether he would remain at United for much longer after scoring just five goals and falling out of the starting line up last season, but he has come back stronger than ever.

Rashford has scored 30 goals in all competitions for the first time in his career and equalled his best ever Premier League goal tally of 17 from the 2019-20 campaign. He also finished top scorer in the Carabao Cup with six goals, including a stunning solo effort against Burnley and netting in the final against Newcastle.
