    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Modric left Los Blancos as the most decorated player in the club's history, having won 28 trophies in 13 years. The Spanish club decided to part ways with the Croatian despite reports he wanted to extend his contract until 2026. In talks with Milan, the 2018 Ballon d'Or winner showed a total willingness to join the Italian side, and only a few personal issues need to be sorted before a deal is finalised.

Modric will join a Milan side coming off the back of a disappointing season that saw them miss out on a place in next season's Champions League. With Reijnders leaving and the likes of Rafael Leao and Theo Hernandez expected to leave, the presence of 39-year-old Modric may provide a much-needed lift heading into next season.
