  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Very few overseas players have found success in the Brazilian top flight. However, the Uruguayan forward is certainly not one of them as he will likely have a chapter on his heroics in Gremio folklore after scoring 17 league goals that propelled them to the second spot in the Serie A. He ended up not only winning the Golden Boot of the league but also the Golden Ball after being adjudged to be the MVP of the competition.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

It has been a historic season for Gremio as they became the first team to finish in the runners-up position after being promoted to Serie A. Until now, the record was shared among Gremio (2006), Athletico-PR (2013), and Internacional (2018) who finished third in the Brazilian Championship after making the leap to Brazil's top flight.

    WHAT NEXT FOR SUAREZ?

Suarez became the fourth player in Gremio's history to win the Bola de Oro award after Ancheta (1973), Paulo Isidoro (1981), and Lucas Leiva (2006). And after scripting a fairytale in Brazil, Florida awaits the forward where he will reunite with former Barcelona team-mate Lionel Messi at Inter Miami.
