With Liverpool preparing for life after Jurgen Klopp, who is stepping down as manager at the end of the season, the Reds have been linked with Atalanta's defensive midfielder amid a superb season for the Serie A outfit. However, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Juventus' interest in the 26-year-old is increasing, with the Old Lady seeking a long-term replacement for Paul Pogba following his four-year ban.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Liverpool are trying to ensure a seamless transition following life after Klopp, as they target Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso as their next manager, and if Koopmeiners joined that would strengthen their midfield, too. However, with his contract expiring in 2027, the Dutch international will not go on the cheap, with Atalanta reportedly valuing him at £43-51 million ($55m-$65m). He himself was flattered by links to Liverpool last year.

The Dutchman has scored 12 goals and bagged four assists in 33 appearances in all competitions this season. He is one of only two players to reach double figures from midfield over the last two campaigns in Europe's top five leagues - along with Manchester City's Phil Foden.

    WHAT NEXT?

The in-demand midfielder will be in Europa League action for Atalanta when they take on Sporting CP in the second leg of their Europa League round-of-16 tie, after drawing the first leg 1-1 in Portugal last time out.
